RECREATION SUMMER STUDENT POSITIONS:

We offer three (3) exciting summer student positions:

1. CAMP COUNSELLOR

2. SUPIE COUNSELLOR

3. WADING POOL ATTENDANT

Position details have been listed below.

ROLE: CAMP COUNSELLOR

Hours: Monday to Friday up to 42.5 hours per week

Duration: June 23 - August 22, 2025

WHATS INVOLVED?

Camp Counsellors plan and deliver programming activities and games for a group of 8-10 children aged 4 to 12. They follow a daily schedule and participate in programming, including swimming, outdoor activities, and offsite trips. Camp Counsellors work as part of a camp team at a recreation centre location. They also complete administrative duties, including attendance tracking, weekly planning and daily reports.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?

  • Previous experience organizing activities for children aged 4-12
  • Must possess and maintain current certification in"Standard" First Aid with CPR Level "C".(This must be clearly identified on your resume.) All "Standard" First Aid certificates must be issued by a training agency recognized by the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB). Please refer to the WSIB websitewsib.on.ca for approved providers. At time of assessment, you will be asked to provide proof that you possess the required certificate(s).
  • Must be able to obtain HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) certification provided by the City of Hamilton certification prior to first scheduled shift.
  • Must be sixteen (16) years of age within 2025 calendar year

ROLE: SUPIE COUNSELLOR

Hours: Monday to Friday - 24 -35 hours per week - weather dependent

Duration: June 23 - August 22, 2025

WHATS INVOLVED?

Working outside all day, Supie Counsellors plan and deliver programming activities and games in a local City of Hamilton park. They also complete administrative duties, including attendance tracking and daily reports.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?

  • Previous experience organizing activities for children aged 4-12.
  • Must possess and maintain current certification in"Standard" First Aid with CPR Level "C". This must be clearly identified on your resume. All "Standard" First Aid certificates must be issued by a training agency recognized by the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB). Please refer to the WSIB websitewsib.on.ca for approved providers. ROLE:WADING POOL ATTENDANT

Hours: 24 to 30 hours per week, including evenings and weekends

Duration: June 16 - September 1, 2025

WADING POOL LOCATIONS: Andy Warburton, Beemer Park, Dundas Driving Park, Gage Park, Jesse Patterson, Powell Park.

WHATS INVOLVED?

Wading Pool Attendants monitor wading pools located throughout Hamilton. They perform pool maintenance, including draining and filling the pool, cleaning the pool area of debris and maintaining chemicals, ensure that the lifesaving equipment is maintained and available, enforce wading pool rules and respond to customer inquiries in a professional manner, perform rescues and first aid within accordance of certification standards, report known or potential hazards, maintenance concerns, and unsafe conditions immediately to the Aquatic Supervisor or designate, complete appropriate documentation as required including pool log, attendance, accident and incident reports, work in accordance with the provisions of applicable health and safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?

  • Must have a current Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion certification or higher aquatic certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain current certification in"Standard" First Aid with CPR Level "C".This must be clearly identified on your resume. All "Standard" First Aid certificates must be issued by a training agency recognized by the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB). Please refer to the WSIB websitewsib.on.cafor approved providers. At time of assessment, you will be asked to provide proof that you possess the required certificate(s).
  • Must be at least fourteen (14) years of age at time of application.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

NOTE 1:Vulnerable Sector (VS) Check or Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (CRJM) Check - All summer student positions within the Recreation Division require a Vulnerable Sector (VS) Check, or for those under the age of eighteen (18), a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (CRJM) Check. VS/CRJM Checks are at your own expense and must be submitted prior to beginning work. VS/CRJM Checks are to be obtained from the Municipality in which you permanently reside. Please check your local Police Services website to confirm what identification is required, cost and payment method. Upon an offer you must provide an original VS/CRJM Check as indicated above with a "Date of Search" of less than sixty (60) days from hire date. VS/CRJM Checks greater than sixty (60) days will not be accepted. In order for your application to be considered, you must not have a criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted at the time of application and your VS/CRJM Check must be satisfactory to the City of Hamilton.
NOTE 2:Minimum Age Requirement for Summer Student Positions within Recreation - Camp Counsellors must be at least sixteen (16) years of age within the 2025 calendar year as according to the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) Accreditation Guidelines (published January 2017). Supie Counsellors and Wading Pool Attendants must be at least fourteen (14) years of age at time of application as according to the Regulation for Industrial Establishments (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 851) made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

NOTE 3: Licences and Certifications - All summer student positions within the Recreation Division require specific licences and/or certifications (please refer to each position). Please be aware that at time of assessment, you will be asked to provide proof of your required licenses and/or certificates. Please ensure all licenses and certifications are clearly identified on your resume.
