Resort Life
The Fishing Guide/Boat Operator will lead a variety of tours, predominantly salmon fishing in 25ft vessels. Our guides also provide transport to off-site kayaking and to Campbell River for guest arrivals and departures. Guides will also conduct boat cruises of the local area, as well as Grizzly viewing tours, guided hikes and other tours based on their knowledge and abilities. Sonoras guides prioritize safety and have excellent boat handling skills. Guides are required to clean and maintain Sonoras fleet to a very high degree of cleanliness, and assist with other tasks around the resort when they are not booked on a guest activity.
The Fishing Guide/Boat Operator will have a passion for excellence in guest service and a strong background in Guiding and Boat operation. They will be expected to function within a team environment and provide a world class experience for our guests.

Resort Life

- Shift work is required from April until October; comprised of 10-14 working days and 4 non-working working days, subject to change during peak season; employees are expected to be flexible in their scheduling to meet the needs of the business.

- Staff are required to leave the resort on their scheduled non-working days and are responsible for securing further transportation and accommodation thereafter.

Job Duties
- Safely operate Sonoras vessels including 25-36ft Grady White cruiser-style vessels, enclosed 28ft water taxis, and other boats in our fleet, as necessary.
- Provide a thorough safety briefing at the beginning of each boat tour, and enforce our policies throughout each trip to ensure safety of both guests and staff.
- Sonoras guides will lead a variety of Fishing trips, Grizzly bear tours, boat cruises, ecological tours and guided hikes as well as providing transport to off-site kayaking locations and Campbell River.
- Be aware of and comply with all DFO fishing regulations, including daily and seasonal fish limits, closures, and compliant packaging of the fish caught.
- Provide your guests with an in-depth orientation to salmon fishing where needed, and teach guests to catch salmon from the moment they bite Sonora guides do not set hooks.
- Clean and Fillet all fish caught from your fishing trips. Vacuum-pack, label, freeze & organize guest fish at the Dock station. Help the dock crew maintain accurate records of all fish caught.
- Help fill out St. Jeans cannery orders for your guests at the end of their fishing trip.
- Participate in DFO Logbook program, as well as any seasonal data collection initiatives by DFO (DNA sampling, returning Hatchery fish heads, etc).
- Maintain all of the boats in Sonoras fleet to a very high degree of cleanliness and good working order at all times.
- Report any maintenance issues to our Maintenance team and Marine Operations Manager.
- Operate Sonoras boats safely and responsibly, with extreme care in the rapids. Always dock slowly and cautiously.
- Work closely with the dock staff with all fish processing, and with dock duties when needed.
- Assist our maintenance team with hauling out boats for servicing or mechanical work.
- Thoroughly clean and shut down boats at the end of the season, adhering to a detailed checklist.
- When you are not guiding, you will be required to complete other tasks around the resort as assigned by the Marine Operations Manager. This could include general grounds or lodge maintenance and cleaning, trail clearing or a variety of other tasks around the Resort property.
- Ensure effective working relationships and clear communication is maintained with all colleagues and departments.
Qualifications
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada and fluent in English. Second languages are an asset.
- 2 years previous experience operating boats of a similar size/style, with excellent boat handling skills.
- The following Transport Canada Commercial Vessel Operator Certificates are required, at minimum: Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), Marine Emergency Duties A3 (MED-A3) or Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS), Radio Operators Certificate Maritime (ROC-M), Standard Marine First Aid (16 hours).
- Transport Canada Limited Masters 60 Ton or any larger Commercial Vessel operator certifications would be an asset.
- Experience trolling for salmon in strong tidal ocean conditions. Other types of fishing experience would also be an asset, including mooching, light-tackle, fly fishing and freshwater fishing.
- Knowledge of local BC wildlife, plant life, fish and marine species, and BC First Nations history Thorough understanding of guiding operations; experience in a live-in resort environment is preferred.
- High School Diploma required. Any additional education or experience in the Hospitality, Tourism, Marine, or Outdoor Wilderness related fields would be an asset.
- Must hold valid Class 5 Drivers License.
- Effective decision making and problem-solving capabilities demonstrating sound judgement.
- Exemplary customer service skills and a demonstrated willingness to exceed guest expectations.
- Capable of the physical aspects of the job: Repetitive tasks, handling heavy loads, combination of sitting, walking, standing for extended periods of time, bending, crouching, kneeling.
