Aquatic Ecology Field Assistant (4 months)

The position is a 4-month term (May-August) based in Cochrane, Alberta reporting to West Fraser's Fisheries Biologist and the Woodlands Manager. As part of our Woodlands Team, you will be a key contributor to integrating fish habitat conservation goals with sustainable forest management activities.

This term position has the unique and exciting role of supporting Fisheries Act and SARA compliant operations in Alberta Woodlands. Successful candidates will have a career aspiration in the fields of forestry, wildlife management, hydrology, or aquatic ecology.

General description

Primarily focused on stream crossing inspections and watershed monitoring, this role will primarily be in-field playing a supporting role to our divisional forestry staff and Fisheries biologist.

Specific responsibilities

  • Stream crossing inspection or monitoring assistance
  • Creating reclamation plans (with guidance) based on provided template and overseeing works following direction from supervisor
  • Collecting photos for sites as needed
  • Construction monitoring in conjunction with fish and fish habitat specialists
  • Aquatic habitat and riparian assessments supporting scientific research conducted by West Fraser
  • Aquatic monitoring equipment deployment and related work (e.g. site surveys, data management, literature reviews, purchasing)
  • Support the woodlands team with training initiatives and field excursions

Our ideal candidate would have:

  • A passion for sustainable resource management and developing on-the-ground solutions with a team of talented professionals.
  • Career aspirations in forestry or wildlife resource management with 2 or 3 years of post-secondary education in this area.
  • Physically capable of working outside in difficult terrain, accessing remote sites by foot or using off-highway vehicles.
  • Working alone in difficult conditions and remote sites
  • Safety focused
  • Basic GIS skills are essential with a demonstrated ability to read maps and use GPS
