The Organization
Community Living Algoma is dedicated to supporting people with developmental disabilities so they can live full lives and be inclusive members of their own communities. They serve that mission by offering a broad range of personalized supports and services, closely aligned with the individual goals of supported people including choice of where they want to live, learn, work and enjoy their leisure time.
CLA was founded in1954 by parents of children with developmental disabilities who were concerned about the future teaching and inclusion of their children. We have continued that focus on supporting people to enjoy life in the community for over sixty years.
Operating residential homes, Community based homes, Supported Independent Living, Community participation supports, Employment, Urgent Response and Volunteer Services, the agency provides support to over 500 individuals and families each year.
What to expect as a Community Support Worker:
This role supports a variety of people that want to explore, learn about, and participate in community life!
Supports Wanted and Needed:
- To pursue and establish integrated community based supports, partnerships and connections based on the goals of people you are supporting
- social, leisure and recreational activities of the persons choice
- Support people to explore and participate in community events, activities and issues of interest
- Support people to achieve their personal goals
- Support people to develop and maintain friendships Facilitate relationships, social roles
Examples of Shared Common Interests:
- Volunteering,Snowshoeing,Swimming,Clubs,Dances,Bingo,goingto the bar to listen to a band,Exercise classes,Bazaars/teas,goingto a restaurant,goingto the movies,Concerts,Baking,cookingclasses,Making friends,Bowling,Dog walking,Hiking,Shopping,Social Groups, Reading,Computer Classes andAll community related activities/events.
Personality Characteristics Needed:
- Be able to work with people we support, their families, friends, other staff and community partners
- Be comfortable in interacting with community partners
- Creative thinking to explore volunteer opportunities
- Planning and working on community goals with people supported
- Ability to match a persons interests with resources, activities and events available in the community
- Confidence to advocate for a persons choices
DUTIES:
- To pursue and establish integrated community-based supports, partnerships and connections based on the goals and aspirations of people you are supporting.
- Provide opportunities that include but are not limited to cultural, social, spiritual, leisure and recreational.
- Implement, developing, maintaining, and monitoring peoples outcomes.
- Maintain accurate and up to date information in organizational reporting systems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma in Human Services with a minimum of two years direct experience in a community-based setting, or the equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, Association philosophy, policies and procedures, positive approaches.
- Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate (St. John Ambulance, Canada or Canadian Red Cross).
- Valid G Drivers License and maintenance of an acceptable driving record isrequired.
- Vehicle Required
- A valid First Aid & CPR Level C certificate is required.
- French is not required but would be considered an asset.
RATE OF PAY & HOURS OF WORK AVAILABLE
- $27.37/hr
- Required to work Day, Afternoon, and flexible working hours.
