We are seeking an HR Generalist to join our team, workingcollaboratively to enhance the Human Resources services provided to staff, our teams, andmanagement.
Under the direction of the Human Resources Manager, the HR Generalist provides culturally informed support for a wide range of HR functions. This may include, but is not limited to, the implementation and interpretation of the policies, programs and procedures, recruitment, employee relations, compliance, reporting, expenses, documentation, promoting organizational values, and supporting employees and management in creating a positive workplace culture. The HR Generalist will also engage in community relations activities, supporting both clients and the broader community by ensuring Human Resources practices reflect our mission and values.
This is a term contract position with an end date of March 31st, 2026.

What you'll do
Employee Relations
- Foster a positive workplace environment that aligns with our mission, values and workplaceculture.
- Actively participate with other teams to ensure a quality approach to concern resolution.
- Coordinate with Direct Supervisors and departments on the implementation of performancemanagement solutions effectively.
- Develop employee messaging and communications initiatives, including guides, how-tos andfact sheets on policies, practices, and procedures that affect employees.
- Support investigations into workplace incidents or complaints and assist the HR Generalist(Mediation and Traditional Healing) in resolving workplace disputes or concerns, includingsupporting the administration of case files, taking notes of conversations, accommodations,performance improvement plans, and progressive disciplinary actions.
- Support Seabirds entities with performance and case management recommendations.
- Ensure all employees have a valid Criminal Record Check.
- Assist with ends of employment and oversee exit interviews and the documentation.
Recruitment Support
- Assist with recruitment and onboarding processes as needed, including supporting Seabirdsentities with recruitment, hiring, and onboarding efforts.
- Complete reference checks as assigned.
Tracking
- Document and track all employee leaves, and other absences, ensuring compliance withpolicies and applicable laws.
- Document and track all employment status changes, employee leaves, unexcused absences, performance, educational leave agreements, surveys, and reports on all Human Resourcesactivities through monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
Policy Development and Implementation
- Develop and facilitate educational sessions for staff and Direct Supervisors on policies and bestpractices, ensuring consistency in their application and to support policy awareness andunderstanding.
- Provide guidance to employees and management on policies and processes.
Data Management and Reporting
- Maintain confidential and accurate records in the HR information system (HRIS), CitationCanada, employee files and throughout the case management and mediation and traditionalhealing process.
- Draft all reports from statistics across HR functions and team (including but not limited to: HRmetrics reporting, such as turnover, exit interviews, and case outcomes, to support strategicdecision-making).
- Oversee the performance appraisals period, including assessments, goal setting, feedback, and surveys.
- Oversee expense reconciliations across all HR functions.
- Ensure confidentiality and security of employee data.
- Support audits and compliance initiatives.
Other Duties
- Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
- Support the work of all HR functions and general notetaking tasks.
- Act as the liaison between Seabirds entities and Seabird Island for coordinating supportive HRfunctions.
What you bring
Qualifications
- Diploma in Human Resources, or a related field.
- 3 years of experience in an HR Generalist or similar role is required.
- Strong knowledge of Federal and Provincial employment laws and HR best practices.
- Proficiency in HR information systems (HRIS), experience with BambooHR and Citation Canadais considered an asset.
- Proven ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize and handlemultiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to facilitate training sessions.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred:
- First Nations candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
- Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Islands culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
- Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with case management, including employee relations, performance improvementplans, and workplace accommodation.
- Experience tracking and managing employee leaves, including compliance with leave-relatedregulations.
Cultural Competency:
- Deep understanding of First Nations cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
Working / Special Conditions
- Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record ReviewProgram Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will beconducted every five years.
- Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'wqel (Seabird Island Band),including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. Thiscommitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
- Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation,insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, andinitiatives.
- Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of events, meetings, and engagements. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.
