Who is COVE?
Since our launch in 2018, COVE has been on a mission to connect people, ideas, resources, and assets to propel solutions and sustainable growth for Canadas marine sector. COVE has been central to the creation of a large cluster of companies and generating a best-in-class start-up ecosystem. COVE provides strategic network-building opportunities, connections, and thought leadership amongst the global ocean tech community and runs programs to foster the development of the workforce, the acceleration of ocean tech product releases, and the success of new ventures by start-ups, scaleups, and SMEs. These programs and COVEs ability to nationally harness multi-disciplinary skills and capabilities within the marine ecosystem is an enabler in solving industry challenges, generating economic benefits, and providing value to investors. To support new talent entering the sector we facilitate a summer internship program for students from across Canada.
What is the COVE Internship Program?

The Opportunity:
JASCO is an international company with over 30 years experience providing consulting services to the Marine Industrial, Oceanographic, Oil & Gas, Fisheries, Defense and IT sectors. JASCO provides services to clients who require specialized capabilities in the areas of Acoustics, Blast Physics, Vision Systems and Image Processing, Systems Integration and Information Systems. We have offices located in Victoria BC, Halifax NS, with satellite offices in the USA, UK, and Australia. JASCO has successfully undertaken major underwater sound measurement programs all over the world, including studies of endangered whale species in the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans.
The Software Group in Halifax develops and supports a variety of acoustic data acquisition, processing, data management and display systems. The type of software in these systems plus stand-alone software applications include embedded acquisition and control software, real-time and non-real-time digital signal processing applications, implementation of localization, classification and data fusion algorithms and development of services and software that provide access to data and data products over the web. JASCO is currently capable of employing a data and information technology student to help with the following:
- Examine and participate in JASCOs current data transfer and storage processes
- Evaluate, propose and implement improvements to data transfer and storage processes
- Test, trouble-shoot and enhance JASCOs data management software applications (DIG (Deployment Information-file Generator), JIM (JASCO Inventory Management), and flac-converter
- Reduce JASCOs data footprint by processing data to smaller files, reducing both the physical and digital footprint of the company
What you will be doing:
The goal of this project is to examine and participate in JASCOs current Data Transfer and Storage processes and to evaluate, propose and implement improvements. They will develop, maintain, and update scripts and applications for data transfer, archival activities, and monitoring. At the end of their term, they will complete a comprehensive report on the state of data transfer and storage at JASCO, including an analysis of the current setup, potential risks, and improvement recommendations.
Possible Tasks Include:
- Working with data storage devices and interfaces to characterize and improve data transfer and data storage processes and procedures
- Testing and enhancement of acoustic data, data products and inventory management data-bases and GUI application interfaces to those data-bases
- Acting as a Tester resource in performing verification and validation of software application features and improvements
Daily Activities Include:
- Catalog and characterize various Data Storage Devices including:Thunderbolt drives, USB drives, HDD/Docking stations, NAS, Cloud Storage Options, LTO9 Tape Drives
- Develop, maintain, and update scripts and applications for data transfer, archival activities, and monitoring
- Research data transfer and storage (DTS) options tailored to company operations. Present findings and propose recommendations to improve DTS processes
- Document DTS procedures and implement changes as required
- Collaborate with teams to improve and optimize the efficiency of data storage systems
At the end of the internship, the student will be expected to:
- Complete a comprehensive report on the state of data transfer and storage at JASCO, including an analysis of the current setup, potential risks, and improvement recommendations
- Communicate with peers and clients on the progress and use of software processes/products developed and/or maintained
- Work with peers and clients to determine requirements and possible solutions when assigned tasks involving new product development and improvements to current products / processes
- Work alone and with assistance when required to investigate, develop, and/or maintain processes and applications
Students will gain the following from working with JASCO:
- Exposure to cloud technologies (e.g., OVH, AWS, Azure, Google) and network infrastructure
- Development of problem-solving, communication, and project management skills
- Hands-on experience with network infrastructure, including how data flows through various devices and protocols, and how to optimize this process
- Increased experience in the software development language and environment used to satisfy assigned tasks
- Familiarization with software development processes that involve collaborators and a mix of development tools
- Opportunity to own software services and/or applications, including determining requirements, design, implementation, test and maintenance all while trying to satisfy operational clients
What you will bring:
Specific skills the student may be expected to demonstrate over the internship include:
- Working with computer and data storage components and devices
- Python programming, SQL and database programming
- Familiarity with CM tools and methods (bitbucket, git, SourceTree)
