Occupational Therapist (Contractor)

The Athabasca Denesuline Education Authority (ADEA) is a First Nation Education Authority serving the three Denesuline First Nations communities in northern Saskatchewan; Black Lake First Nation, Hatchet Lake First Nation, and Fond Du Lac First Nation. The Authority serves a total student population of approximately 1,300+ students. The Authority is working toward improved educational outcomes by utilizing the latest technology, progressively piloting programs, and integrating Denesuline culture into the classroom and school curriculum.

The ADEA is seeking a competent, confident, and motivated individual to fill the position of an Occupational Therapist as a contractor at Father Porte Memorial Dene School (FPMDS) in Black Lake, Northern Saskatchewan. FPMDS is a Pre-K to Grade 12 facility with a student population of 400+ and professional and paraprofessional staff of 60+ members. In this role, you will provide strong interpersonal skills, commitment to learning and teaching in project-based ways and provide an enthusiastic learning environment for students.

Overview

The Occupational Therapist will help students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally by providing programs that will help their fine motor, visual, motor integration, sensory processing, and other occupational performance skills. The occupational therapist will also consult with teachers, administrators, parents, and other service providers when designing a program to help each student and oversee the process of the program. Occupational Therapist will be working a 1 week shift per month.

Contract Summary:

  1. To complete assessments of pre-school and school aged children and interpret diagnostic treatment and education programming information to parents, students (where appropriate), teachers, and educational assistants.
  2. To monitor educational and treatment intervention and provide ongoing support and consultation to paraprofessionals delivering these programs and services.
  3. To actively participate in developing and delivering professional development in-services and workshops for school personnel, parents, students, and community professionals.
  4. To provide direct intervention services for children as required and to coordinate ongoing treatment with other professionals.
  5. Instructs the paraprofessional in the use of effective intervention strategies with the student(s)

Qualifications:

  • Registered Occupational Therapist in good standing with the CAOT SK Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists - Saskatchewan
  • An understanding of Denesuline language and culture would be considered an asset.
  • Willingness to travel 1 week at a time per month.
