Position Scope

As the Controls Engineer, you are responsible for the end-to-end development and delivery of controls and automation engineering packages and systems. This includes the development of control narratives, alarm setpoint matrixes, cause and effect diagrams, and instrument selection based on the design and process requirements of the Plant. You identify new control or electrical systems which perform better or enable flexibility in the process or mechanical teams design.
This position reports to the Manager, Controls Engineering.

Expect to be on-site in Squamish BC at least 3 days/week and more frequently during commissioning/testing periods.

Responsibilities

Technical:

  • Develop architecture automation strategies.
  • Prepare, review and comment on existing or future process plants design packages including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Control Philosophy, Control Narrative, Control Loop List, Logic Diagrams, Control System Design, Control Software, Control Hardware Specifications, Network & Communication Architecture, and other design standards.
  • Develop and review control panel electrical schematics, loop drawings and cable schedules.
  • Identify instrumentation, process control strategies and software for process optimization.
  • Develop and maintain company standardization documents and libraries for PLC/DCS programming, HMI design, communication interfaces, operation technology (OT) infrastructure and Alarm Management Strategies.
  • Write PLC control software, design HMI displays and setup data historians.
  • Update and maintain company standards and requirements for control system selection, naming conventions, style conventions, programming standards etc.
  • Assist plant Operators with troubleshooting control system/instrumentation issues as needed.
  • Interface and provide oversight with an EPC team.
  • Actively contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures.
  • Participate in HAZOPs
  • Respond to plant process emergencies on an on call basis.

Key Competencies:

  • Good understanding of PID, FF and Cascade Loops.
  • Good understanding of electrical systems, control enclosures, 3-phase systems (< 1kV).
  • Good understanding of design standards such as ISA 101, 88 and 106 standards.
  • Good understanding of PLC/DCS systems (Allen Bradley preferred).
  • Knowledge of multiple HMI/SCADA systems (FactoryTalk & Ignition preferred).
  • Familiarity with data historians.
  • Experience managing or working for EPC.
  • Experience in Statistical Process Control (SPC) or other quality initiatives.
  • Excellent PLC/HMI troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently towards multiple deadlines with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Thrive on doing things that have not been done before (explorer mindset) and tackling challenging problems.

  • Identify, report, and resolve unsafe conditions, processes or actions within the workplace.
  • Ensure that all environmental and safety related incidents, accidents, and near misses are reported in the appropriate timeframe and investigated in line with company policy.

Education and Experience

Education:

  • BSc in Electrical Engineering or equivalent

Experience:

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in BC, or eligibility for registration is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience at developing architecture automation strategies for PLC facilities
  • Hands on experience working in an industrial facility.


Compensation

  • $81,000 to $122,000 Base Salary with additional bonus pay. This range covers Intermediate to Senior level candidates.
