SmartICE is looking to hire a Database Architect. This person will play a critical role in developing, overseeing, organizing, storing, and analyzing data and data systems at SmartICE.

SmartICE is an award-winning technological innovation for the North. SmartICE offers a suite of climate change adaptation tools that integrate Indigenous and local knowledge of ice with advanced data acquisition, remote monitoring and satellite mapping for ice travel safety. Our community-based services provide invaluable, data-driven insights into ice thickness and local ice travel conditions, in near real-time.

What you will be doing

  • Developing a database for qualitative Indigenous knowledge, geospatial mapping data and community-based quantitative ice monitoring data.
  • Coordinating and participating with external partners in developing a database and interface that utilizes the latest developments in data management, network security, and Indigenous data sovereignty practices.
  • Managing data-oriented systems and analyzing the organization's data, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
  • Collaborating with various teams to collect and organize data, creating reports and visualizations, and developing data-driven strategies to improve outreach efforts.
  • Guide, support deployment, and maintain data governance programs (privacy, regulations, policies, communication).
    Lead efforts to address data quality, consistency, standardization, and security.

What you will bring

  • A Master's degree in a related discipline (e.g. Information Science, Data Science, Computer Science, Geomatics, or Statistics) is preferred.
  • Graduate studies or equivalent experience in database management, geospatial data, data mining, artificial intelligence or natural language processing and advanced statistics is required.
  • 2+ years experience in management of technical teams (preferably overseeing data management or data engineering functions).
  • Demonstrated expert experience in the design and implementation of data management; systems design, testing and evaluation.
  • Strong proficiency in data integration platforms, DBMS like SQL, ETL processes, AWS.
  • Experience with cloud-based data storage solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience in ArcMap & ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise (Server & Portal)
  • Excellent understanding of data validation, MDM, data governance frameworks, principles, best practices.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, or Java.
  • Excellent plain language communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across cultures and teams.
  • Humility to listen, learn and respect knowledge from Indigenous staff and community members.
  • Experience in Arctic research is an asset.
  • Experience with data governance frameworks, including Indigenous Data Sovereignty, OCAP, FAIR, CARE etc. is an asset.
  • Experience working with Indigenous and/or marginalized communities is an asset.
