Summer Student – Building DepartmentPOSITION SUMMARY
Working under the direction of the Chief Building Official, theStudent Building role is responsible for providing support to the Building Department for the Town of Kingsville. The student will be exposed to all aspects of the building permit and inspection process, including assistance with building permit applications and moving forward existing permit files. The student will have exposure to various aspects of the construction industry and will be required to assist Building Inspectors to fulfill their legislative duties. The student will be required to work directly with developers, contractors and skill trades. They will be exposed to various construction sites including residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural construction industries with a concentrated effort on the greenhouse and agricultural-food industry. The successful candidate is required to engage various contractors and trades to assist the Building Officials with inspections and plans review. The successful candidate will also be required to assess various building permits for the energy efficiency and resource conservation initiatives as amended in the Ontario Building Code with the objective of delivering positive environmental outcomes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Provide technical support for building permits and applications
  1. Provide support to Building Inspectors, Building/Planning Tech and Office Support team
  1. Collect and compile data for open/dormant building permit files with a concentrated effort to complete and close permit files.
  1. Prepare correspondence for permit holders and follow-up communication with them
  1. Data entry into various permitting platforms
  1. Some field inspections and documentation may be required
  1. Customer service including telephone and counter reception duties
  1. Records retention support including paper filing and scanning documents
  1. Other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Be a returning Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology student or other related discipline in a recognized College or University program in Ontario and be legally entitled to work in Canada as a student
  1. Hold a valid driver's licence
  1. Be self-motivated
  1. Have good written and oral communication skills
  1. Have the ability to demonstrate professionalism in dealing with the public
  1. Strong organization, interpersonal and time management skills
  1. Good technical comprehension of the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code
  1. Ability to work in a fast paced team environment and meet deadlines
  1. Able to handle information in a confidential matter

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is in an office environment, 35 hours a week.
Hourly Rate of Pay:
$22.00 per hour
