The Details

Our underwriters focus on two fundamental questions: Should Liberty Mutual write a policy for a particular customer? What is a fair price for the risk that we would incur by writing the policy?

As an Underwriting Trainee, you'll draw upon your strong analytic, communication, and negotiation skills to understand our customers and their needs, and how to profitably accept the risks that our policies cover.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Successfully complete a 6 month Underwriting Training Program which includes: on-the-job training, classroom instruction, self-study, case studies, rating and underwriting activities.
  • Develop judgment to accept, reject, or modify new/renewal business for various lines of business (with guidance and direction as needed from experienced underwriters or team leaders) to ensure a profitable book of business.
  • Price business in a timely manner according to company underwriting and pricing guidelines.
  • Market products to achieve company growth and profitability targets.
  • Develop on-going relationships with internal and external customers; monitor profitability and quality of submissions; and be aware of underwriting and/or product changes.
  • Review and develop a strong knowledge of: policy coverages, broker relationships, underwriting and team guidelines, processes and procedures and business strategy/organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • 0-2 years of work experience (not necessarily in insurance).
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in business, mathematics, economics or finance.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide information in a clear, concise manner with an appropriate level of detail and professionalism.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong business relationships.
  • Ability to gather information, analyze facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Initiative driven and self-starter.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Demonstrated organization skills and abilities.
  • Willingness to complete professional designation(s) and continued insurance education.
  • This position may require some travel to Liberty Mutual's US office(s).
