The Township of Perth East (the “Township”) is recruiting one (1) Full-Time Operator/Labourer (3 month contract) in the Public Works Department.

Position Overview:

Professional Responsibilities:
- Operates graders (for grading, snow ploughing, scarifying and ice blading), trucks (single axle and tandem), with snow plough, scarifying sander, water tank and dump attachments, loader, backhoe, sweeper, pickup truck, chain saws, wood chipper, other power and hand tools.
- Carries out construction, maintenance and repair services in rural and urban areas.
- Conducts roads construction including hauls, spreads and levels gravel, water and calcium application.
- Manages road maintenance and repair including smooth and levels gravel roads, proper ditching, grading, shoulder widening, slope trimming, back filling and filling washouts caused by heavy rain and winter break up, grades and trims ditches, maintains and repairs pavement through cold, hot patching
- Performs bridge and culvert repairs and replacements, steel beam approaches, guardrails, guiderails and guideposts, cleans rubbish and critters as required.
- Repairs, replaces and installs road signs.
- Carries out winter maintenance including ploughing roads with plough truck and grader, starting with school bus routes and working through a grid of other priority routes. Removes snow from urban and residential area. Carries out sanding and ice blading, brush, tree and rubbish clearing including clearing brush and trees from roadsides during construction and following storms. Removes hazardous and dead trees, limbs and rubbish from roadsides and adjacent areas, maintains weed control, with proper spraying and cutting. Collects and removes garbage from roads and adjacent areas.
- Checks and maintains streets, sidewalks and street lights. Cleans and sweeps urban streets.
- Assists with landfill site maintenance.
- Responds to emergency situations (storms and accidents) to clear roads and to restore them to pre-emergency conditions.
- Supports maintenance of parks including, grass cutting, hedge and tree trimming and flowerbeds, general building and playground equipment safety checks.
- Assists in maintenance of cemeteries including grass cutting, removing weeds and maintaining flowerbeds.
- Coordinates and assists with burials and plot marking.
- Services and maintains vehicles, machinery, equipment, and tools including oil changes, lubrication, filters, washing and painting.
- Completes mechanical repairs including replacement of hoses, lights, wiring, starters, alternators and tires.
- Conducts metal fabricating and welding on machinery including replacing plough blades and other attachments to trucks and graders
- Keeps work areas, garages and drive sheds in a neat, clean, safe condition.
- Follows the Township's Health and Safety policies and procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment and other regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
- Provides support and back up to other departmental staff as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Requirements and Desirable Criteria:
- Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year previous work experience, preferably working with equipment and a demonstrated willingness to learn
- “DZ” License required. Preference will be given to “AZ” Licensed drivers.
- Certificate in chainsaw operation, WHIMIS and first aid are components of ongoing training and development.
- Mechanical and technical ability to operate vehicle, machinery, equipment and tools in a safe and proper manner.
- Skilled in physical and manual dexterity.
- Ability to work independently as well as effectively in a team.
- Water and wastewater experience or certification is desirable.
Working Conditions and Pay Range:
- Working outside in all weather conditions including extreme heat, humidity, cold and wet. Possible exposure to severe storm and winter conditions involving white outs, slippery conditions, and fallen tree limbs.
- Works with interruption and is expected to meet deadlines. Exposure to disagreeable people and situations, including unpredictable traffic and road rage can be expected.
- May work in confined spaces, trenches and on uneven ground. Work requires some heavy lifting, carrying, climbing and crawling.
- 44 hour work week. Overtime may be required during peak periods and in emergency situations.
- Pay Grade 7: $26.41 - 33.01 (2024 Rates)
- Anticipated Start Date: January 2, 2025
