Function & Overview
Reporting to the COO, the Director of Student Affairs provides strategic leadership, planning, development, and administration of a comprehensive array of college-wide policies and services to support and enhance student success while ensuring college strategic goals are met or exceeded. The Director of Student Affairs oversees a variety of functional areas to provide highly integrated, student focused services that support academic success, personal student success, health, and mental well-being. In addition, the Director of Student Affairs is the primary source of advice and consultation on culturally based student services and student-related matters, providing expert advice to college management, faculty and community partners on issues pertaining to student rights, student behaviour (including disruptiveness), student engagement and co-curricular activity, student wellness and student-centered facilities, services and practices. The Director of Student Affairs ensures appropriate liaison with other departments and academic divisions to respond to and coordinate on matters relating to student safety, incident investigations and student behaviour management on and off campus. The Director of Student Affairs is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinsh:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ganigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).
Duties
The duties of the Director of Student Affairs include, without limitation:
Service Assessment, Development and Delivery
- Providing leadership in identifying, designing, delivering, and implementing a broad range of institution wide student services, including health and counselling, accommodation, cultural programming, orientation, peer tutoring, student engagement, test center and other related services;
- Ensuring that programs and services align with institutional goals through ongoing evaluation and review;
- Participating in and supervising the preparation and recommendation of detailed budgets, including costs estimates, for supervised functions, while managing a diverse range of staffing, partner, and funding models;
- Fostering an effective, collaborative environment to maximize student success and engagement by ensuring processes are in place to solicit input and feedback from students;
- Providing clarification of student service commitments between SNP and partner institutes;
- Tracking KPIs to document Student Affairs initiatives and measure outcomes (recruitment, retention, student evaluations);
- Integrating with other student support areas (e.g. recruitment, admission, financial aid, ) to ensure effective advising throughout student lifecycle;
- Increasing opportunities to obtain and respond to student feedback towards improved student experience;
Policy, Procedure and Program Development
- Directing and facilitating the development and implementation of new policies, procedures and programs, ensuring they are aligned with and interdependent on other areas of the institution;
- Directing all aspects of change management, including initial consultations, team/project management, and implementation;
- Determining the appropriate communication processes to involve and inform stakeholders affected by changes;
Staff Management and Development
- Maintaining high levels of staff and departmental performance through effective recruitment, selection, performance management, and evaluations;
- Providing professional development opportunities to support staff growth and expertise;
- Facilitating problem solving processes for concerns and/or disputes involving departmental staff;
Health, Wellness and Accessibility
- Overseeing Health, Wellness, and Accessibility operations, working collaboratively to identify evolving student needs, and ensuring students have access to internal resources as well as external health and wellness services through cultivated partnerships, as appropriate;
- Developing and maintaining a comprehensive Mental Health strategy tailored for the student population at SNP;
- Enhancing SNPs strategy to address student accommodations via policy, procedure and resources, including maintenance of applicable data;
- Promoting an inclusive approach rooted in the SNP Values which will consider access to counselling, health/wellness support, and education including mental health, a safe campus, sexual violence response, and the continued consideration of how SNP will continue to promote student wellness indicators;
Student Engagement and Academic Advisement
- Overseeing the implementation and evolution of student engagement initiatives, including volunteer co-curricular opportunities, and academic advising services, while liaising with academic divisions;
- Promoting opportunities to facilitate increased positive connection to the SNP identity and experience, including development of an alumni network towards expanded institutional retention;
- Improving awareness, process and communication of academic and/or program requirements, including absence reporting, missed work, grade appeals, extenuating circumstances, etc.;
- Enhancing collaboration across units and services to increase positive student outcomes (e.g. Academic programs, Achievement Centre, Contact North, etc.);
- Developing and implementing academic skills support services, such as online modules, handouts, email/blog, workshops for topics such as, time management, motivation, study skills, language, career/education planning etc.;
- Facilitating opportunities to connect learning to expanded outcomes, including career and education;
- Overseeing the ongoing development and delivery of robust student orientation programming including a comprehensive First Year Experience program;
- Collaborating on experiential opportunities and the co-curricular record to document SNP learning outcomes, achievements, and how these can be connected more broadly;
Student Rights and Responsibilities
- Developing student rights and responsibilities policies in alignment with applicable policies and in support of quality assurance standards (i.e. PEQAB, WINHEC, etc.);
- Overseeing non-academic student rights and responsibilities processes, including investigations, mediation, arbitration, and appeals of student issues and complaints;
- Serving as a consultant for academic related complaints, issues, investigations, and appeals;
- Enhancing the student conduct and discipline policy, process and communication (to faculty, staff and students), including increasing awareness of expectations and responsibilities of students in all programs;
- Facilitating early identification and response to support to students in difficulty prior to escalation;
- Supporting staff through communication during arising student conduct and discipline concerns, with adherence to confidentiality requirements;
Leadership & General Administration
- Demonstrating sound fiscal management and data-driven decision-making by overseeing development, budgeting, and facilities within their department; and wisely steward resources to address current institutional needs and in anticipation of future growth;
- Supervising all staff within their department; authorizing overtime, and evaluating and endorsing requests for personal and vacation time; review and approve year-end leave allowance calculations and monthly time sheets; and generate annual time tracking workbooks, as needed;
- Knowing, understanding, and following existing SNP policies and processes and supporting the collaborative development and effective implementation of new and emergent policies and processes;
- Providing accurate, timely and comprehensive information and guidance on all pertinent matters within their jurisdiction to the COO, President and CEO, and associated committees;
- Participating in maintaining a supportive and healthy environment conducive to learning and working at SNP; and
- Performing additional functions as delegated by the COO and as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Masters or graduate degree, with post-graduate credentials in Education, Social Work, Health or Student Development;
- Formal education and training in the principles of human behavior and learning, with a focus on areas such as abnormal psychology and deviant behaviour;
- Formal training in behavioural risk assessment;
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a post secondary education environment; with positions of progressively increasing responsibility;
- Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated and relevant management experience; and
- Sound knowledge of appropriate legislation pertaining to the postsecondary education environment, such as the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Criminal Code of Canada, and similar regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of student development theory and related programs;
- Knowledge in mediation and/or conflict resolution strategies, with proven skills in mediating disputes effectively;
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning in areas such as threat and risk assessment, harassment, and bully prevention;
- Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on written expression (i.e., faultless spelling and grammar, and professional style);
- Sound interpersonal skills including communication, organization, negotiation, confidentiality and professional judgement;
- Demonstrated competencies in strategic thinking, coordination, analysis, policy development, and change management;
- Ability to work under pressure and manage schedules, portfolios, and timelines, to meet demanding deadlines;
- Proven track record of effective leadership and collaboration with senior management, teaching and research staff, and unit managers;
- A general and current knowledge of Hodinsh:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and stakeholders;
- Capacity to work both independently and in a team setting, demonstrating Hodinsh:nih values of Ga`nigohi:yo:; and
- Demonstrated familiarity with standard desktop computing programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and database applications, on the Windows 2010 (or later) operating system.
