Position Description:

As a member of an energetic Day Camp team, you will manage a group of campers in one of Norfolk County's Outdoor Adventure Camps with responsibilities including program planning, program delivery and administration; supervises a group of 1 to 10 campers (children or youth), providing lifeguarding duties during swim times.

Through effective leadership and programming, enables children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the wellbeing of a group of campers under the guidance of the Day Camp Coordinator, ensuring camp activities are safe, inclusive and high quality following the High Five model.

To safeguard life and prevent accidents at the County summer program sites, specifically Backus Heritage Conservation Area.

  • To promote good relations with participants of camps
  • Responsible for safety, training and risk management on site
  • Work according to Occupational Health and Safety Act, Lifesaving Society Standards, and Norfolk County Policies
  • Provide lifeguarding to campers and staff in organized swimming sessions on site
  • Assist with special water activities and special Norfolk County events that are held at Day Camp locations
  • Assist with camp maintenance
  • Facilitates daily camp activities such as sports, games, swimming, crafts and special events. Helps to ensure programming is adapted to camper needs with regards to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc.
  • Closely monitors camper conduct and provide in-water supervision during all swim times or performs lifeguarding duties as assigned for swim times in the outdoor pool.
  • Keeps attendance records and promptly reports absences to the Outdoor Adventure Day Camp Coordinator. This including knowing the location of each camper at all times during camp operation
  • Prioritizes child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp and for each camper within his/her assigned group. Evaluates situations of potential risks to the safety, protection and well being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks
  • Serves as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing Norfolk County's customer service, diversity and inclusion (children/youth with a disability, ethno-cultural, English as a second language, socio-economic) policies.
  • Assist with the facilitation of special events hosted by Norfolk County including summer day camp water related events
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, reporting any inventory shortages to the Day Camp Coordinator
  • Organizes and assists with set up and clean up of camp events, activities and programs
  • Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise
  • Ensures all participants are aware of upcoming events and schedule changes
  • Follows Norfolk County policies and procedures and Summer Day Camp procedures in program activities
  • Maintains positive, constructive relationships with camp staff and volunteers with the goal of meeting camper needs
  • Coaches volunteers and campers
  • Provides regular updates and feedback to the Outdoor Adventure Day Camp Supervisor
  • May assist at alternate Day Camp locations as required.
  • Attends all and participates in orientation, training sessions prior to and throughout the summer.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High School/College/University student - minimum of 15 years of age
  • NL Certification, pool option, waterfront is considered an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid, C.P.R Level C HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development (if hired, must be obtained by July 7, 2025)
  • Experience working with children; knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music and/or games
  • Experience in a leadership capacity is required i.e. student council member, leadership role on youth council
  • Ability to facilitate and adapt program plans and activities on a daily basis
  • Excellent customer service and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of programs offered by Norfolk County
  • Ability to work in a team environment, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision and follow all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
  • Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet)
  • High degree of alertness and vigilance with attention to detail as it relates to the aquatic environment
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Notes:

Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays.

Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.

At time of application must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.

Applicants must submit a criminal record check (dated within the last 3 months) from their local police service for approval prior to commencing employment.

Duration:

The duration of this contract will be approximately 3 months. Applicants are expected to fulfill the entire contract period commencing May 24, 2025 to August 22, 2025. Training will occur in June and camp begins July 7, 2025. Schedules of up to 40 hours per week will not commence until July.
