About Breton Ability Centre

Breton Ability Centre is a purpose driven organization, supporting people with varying abilities. Breton Ability Centre is a leader in transformational change by the quality of support we provide to our residents and participants with cognitive disabilities. BAC's vision is to foster greater inclusion, independence, support, and acceptance of all persons with varying abilities in Cape Breton. We use a support and coaching model following social model principles with specific emphasis on the UN Convention of the Rights for Persons with Disabilities. Our service streams include Residential support, Community Living support, and Independent Living support. We employ strategies such as Positive Behavior Support, Youth Day programs, Learning and Employment services, and Outreach in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to achieve our mandate. Our staff are passionate advocates for people with disabilities and we maintain this passion by investment in staff development, wellness, and safety.

What you'll be doing… The Licensed Practical Nurse provides supports and services to individuals with varying abilities and their families. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the LPN assumes a leadership role in providing support, advocacy to individuals and being involved in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs to assist in promoting social, educational, vocational, personal, and healthy development of individuals.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid Nova Scotia LPN License;
  • Must be comfortable working in a team environment and actively contributing to a multidisciplinary team.
  • A clear Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry Search and a valid driver's license is required;
  • Up to date first aid and CPR certification is considered an asset.

Minimum experience:

  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills, is an excellent communicator and take the initiative to address issues and concerns with the direct Supervisor, as they arise.
    • Must be committed to the development of individuals with varying abilities and fostering opportunities for independence for each person.
    • Commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities within a Social Model based on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
    • Experience with community development and partnership/collaboration required

Minimum skills and ability:

    • Good organization and leadership skills
    • Ability to work independently and as a team player
    • A high level of professionalism and judgement regarding client interactions and relationships
    • Strong observational skills, time management, and attention to detail
    • Writing ability; complete paperwork & reporting documents as required
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills; use of respectful language
    • Able to be on their feet for longer periods of time.
