Paracel Laboratories Ltd. is a full-service Environmental and Indoor Air Quality laboratory. Our main laboratory facilities are located in Ottawa and are supported by an environmental lab in Hamilton and a microbiology and asbestos laboratory in Mississauga. Additional service depots are located in Kingston, London, Niagara, Windsor, and Richmond Hill. We support a broad spectrum of projects for professional clients from across Canada and around the world. Our client base primarily consists of major environmental consultants, all levels of government and industrial manufacturers located predominantly in Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara, Eastern and Southwestern Ontario.
The Opportunity
Paracel Laboratories Ltd. is seeking a Laboratory Analyst to join our team. This full-time, permanent position is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, dexterous, and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for asbestos or fungal analyses by using polarized light microscopy (PLM), phase contrast microscopy (PCM) and brightfield microscopy, and will under the direct supervision of the Department Supervisor.
This is a full-time, permanent position at 25 Northside Rd, Unit C, Nepean, Ottawa Ontario, K2H 8S1.
Key Responsibilities
  • Preparation, detection, identification, and quantification of materials for the presence of asbestos content using visual estimation percentage and properties of asbestos/non-asbestos materials by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM).
  • Preparation and analysis of asbestos air samples using Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM).
  • Preparation, identification, and quantification of fungal and bacterial materials in a Level 2 Biohazard laboratory setting.
  • Extensive microscope work and use of computers to manage workflow and data entry.
  • Coordination of sample analyses and data review based on priority and turnaround times.
  • Maintenance of Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) programs, adhering to ISO 17025 and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Assisting with daily laboratory operations, including maintenance, calibration, stocking, and cleaning.
  • Occasionally providing front desk coverage.
  • Working extended hours and weekends, may occasionally be required.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
  • Any experience in asbestos characterization by PLM and/or fungal analysis, would make you a more suitable candidate.
  • Superb attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and maintain a high degree of manual dexterity.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to thrive in a team or independently.
  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and ISO 17025.
  • Proven computer proficiency, including MS Office (Word, Excel).
