Reporting to the Manager, Energy and Bioproducts Development, the Energy Engineer oversees strategic planning of natural gas and electrical energy consumption at the various divisions across West Fraser.
The Energy Engineer will work with the Energy & Carbon Section Lead, collaborate with the Environment and Sustainability Team, and other Energy Engineers across the company. This exciting position requires development of a strong rapport with West Fraser's management, energy, technical and engineering resources
You'll Do:
- Participate and administer a Strategic Energy Management Plan (SEMP) for Alberta, and support SEMP deliverables across the company,
- Reviewed and updated quarterly,
- Travel to various divisions to conduct in-person energy scans and identification of opportunities,
- Communicate to divisional and corporate managers,
- Administer business system and new initiatives in line with evolving energy policy,
- Identify and evaluate fuel switching and low carbon electrification opportunities for the intent of reducing GHG emissions,
- Lead the initiative to understand current practices regarding energy reporting,
- Leverage KPIs to track and report specific energy consumption and emissions data,
- Assist divisions with the refinement of decarbonization roadmaps and strategic budgeting initiatives,
- Project Development and Management,
- Collect and analyze data from mill systems to inform decision making,
- Collaborate with divisional personnel to understand and implement energy efficient technologies
- Identify and apply for potential industry and government funding opportunities,
- Prepare reports and proposals for existing or new energy reduction projects,
- Prepare stakeholder presentations describing facilities and various energy efficiency projects,
- Monitor process and non-process operations,
- Improve the understanding of energy systems including electricity, natural gas, steam, and compressed air systems,
- Initiate, organize, and complete energy audits,
- Complete metering and verification studies for utility and government sponsored projects,
You have:
- Communication Skills,
- Must be able to translate and communicate technical specifications, concepts, and objectives to a variety of audiences,
- Proficient with virtual and in-person presentations,
- Strong written communication skills are required for preparing reports and proposals for utility providers, consultants, and West Fraser management,
- Technical Expertise,
- Understanding of power generation, transmission and distribution, and consumption including basic knowledge of power quality to inform strategic decisions,
- Understanding of industrial utilities including natural gas, steam, and compressed air,
- Learn and understand processes such as wood products manufacturing, co-generation of heat and power, renewable energy systems and turbine technology.
- Learn and understand component-level electrical and mechanical systems as they pertain to energy generation and consumption,
- Troubleshooting and optimizing of all energy consuming systems,
- Education and Training,
- Must have a valid licence as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.), a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certificate, or a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) certificate.
- Ideal candidate will have a background in electrical or mechanical engineering (preferred); or applied sciences,
- Microsoft Office suite with high-level of proficiency in Excel,
- Experience using dataPARC, PI System, or other SCADA software packages an asset,
- Ability to work independently, possessing excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail
- Regular travel to operations will be required and a class five driver's licence is an asset.
Compensation Package:
- The salary range for this position may vary depending on experience, education, and location. The yearly salary range is between $100k-$125K$
