To help fulfill its mission, LOFT is hiring Relief Dietary Aide.

Job Summary:
The Dietary Aide renders a range of services that relate to the operation of the kitchen. These responsibilities include the preparation and service of food for the meals as scheduled and for other special occasions as requested and the storing and stocking of food. Cleaning duties pertaining to maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining room, as well as other delegated responsibilities, are included to ensure the efficient operation of the kitchen's food service.
What You Will Do:
Food Preparation
  • Take direction for the Program Director or his/her delegate regarding the preparation of food items.
  • Maintain hygienic procedures in the kitchen, serving areas and dining room at all times.
  • Take and monitor the temperature of food items while on the service line.
  • Assist in all phases of the operation of the kitchen.

Food Service
  • Take direction from the Program Director to ensure that all hygienic and other service procedures are followed in the dining room.
  • Set and clear tables in the dining room.
  • Assist in detecting any residents who are absent from a meal.
  • Assist the Cook in putting away all deliveries and rotating stock.
  • Assist with the preparation of menu/food items available for residents to purchase.
  • Assist residents to purchase food items; take money, make change and package items.
General
  • Maintain the dining room in a clean and tidy condition by daily vacuuming, dusting and other cleaning duties.
  • Wash the dishes according to the established guidelines and put away.
  • Be courteous and friendly to the residents.
  • Assist residents during meal time as required (i.e. opening sugar packets/creamers, cutting food etc.).
  • Serve the main meal to residents, waitress style, including all beverages.
  • Prepare and deliver trays to floors, occasionally and under unusual circumstances.
  • Perform daily cleaning duties as outlined in the weekly cleaning schedule.
  • Report any needed supplies to the Program Director.
Safety
  • Follow all sanitation and infection control procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable and up to date with the fire and evacuation emergency procedures.
  • Report the absence of or defect in any equipment or protection device to the Program Director immediately.
Other Responsibilities
  • Attend staff, supervisory and in-service training meetings, as required.
  • Perform other duties, from time to time, as delegated by the Program Director.

What You Bring:
Must Haves
  • Completion of a recognized Food Handlers Course and/or a minimum of 1 year of experience in a food service operation in a large residential setting
  • General knowledge in regard to sanitation and proper food storage/preparation
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English
  • Kind, caring and sensitive to the elderly
  • Physically fit to meet the requirements of the job (i.e. lifting, standing for extended periods)
  • Ability to work together as a member of a team
  • Ability to follow program procedures and policies
  • Ability to interact with clients in a positive and supportive manner

Nice-to-Haves
  • Understanding of cultural competency and anti-oppression framework
  • Reflective of a multi-barriered group, as serviced by the program, a strong asset

Work Environment:
Since the workplace involves working in client/client member's own homes, staff may be subjected to secondhand smoke while performing their job duties.
The following physical movements are required as part of the regular routines of the job:

  1. Frequency:
    • Standing – ongoing daily
    • Walking – ongoing daily
    • Sitting – 1.5 hrs/day (breaks)
    • Climbing – stairs to staff room and washroom
    • Lifting (floor to waist) – twice/week – max. 35 lbs
    • Lifting (waist to shoulder) – ongoing daily – under 10 lbs
    • Repetitive bedding, lifting, twisting or turning – 2 hrs/day
    • Crouching – 1-2 times/day
    • Reaching – 1 hour/day sporadically
    • Kneeling – 1-2 times/day
    • Bending – 1 hour/day, sporadically
  1. Weight factors - Frequency per day:
    • Under 2 lbs – ongoing
    • Under 5 lbs – ongoing
    • Under 10 lbs – 2 hours/day, twice/day
    • 15-20 Pounds – 8 times/day
    • 20-30 lbs – occasionally, 1-2 times/day
    • 30-50 lbs – twice/day


Use of equipment such as a trolley is provided for staff to move heavy items to and from work/preparation area.
