OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently accepting applications for a full-time, permanent Environmental Scientist / Risk Assessor to join our team in Sherwood Park or Calgary, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the completion of projects primarily for Oil and Gas, Industrial and Commercial clients in accordance with Vertex guidelines/protocols and project scopes. This ideal candidate will have proven experience in Phase 1 and 2 Environmental Site Assessment (ESA), Tier 1 and Tier 2 approaches (including the Subsoil Salinity Tool), for contaminated sites closure and Remediation. This individual will play a critical role in the execution of all aspects of the project while delivering a cost-effective approach that exceeds our client's expectations. This is primarily an office-based position with the potential for some working from home (hybrid model) and field work to conduct site visits, support field teams, liaise with clients or regulatory personnel, etc.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or higher education related to environmental sciences, toxicology, or other related discipline, with a

professional designation (or be eligible for a designation in the near-term)

  • Minimum 5 years of environmental work experience in the following areas:
    • Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 Environmental Site Assessments
    • Groundwater monitoring and sampling
    • Alberta Tier 2 approaches including recalculation of soil and groundwater remediation guidelines, justification letters, and screening level and quantitative environmental risk assessments (ERAs)
    • Exposure control via risk management measures
    • Record of Site Condition OneStop submissions
  • Experience with risk-based approaches for regulatory closure of contaminated sites
  • Subsoil Salinity Tool certification and use of other fate and transport models is an asset
  • Project management experience is ideal
  • Strong leadership skills within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Experience working with multiple regulatory agencies in Western Canada
  • Experience managing relationships with clients, municipalities, First Nation communities, and/or other government entities
  • Willingness to work in the field (roughly 10% of work hours)
  • Willingness to travel within Western Canada as required
  • Excellent attention to detail, and communication and technical reporting skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Spend ~90% of work hours performing technical support and report review for environmental projects
  • Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments (senior review)
  • Phase 2 and 3 Environmental Site Assessments (author and senior review)
  • Provide risk-based approaches for contaminated sites including recalculation of soil and groundwater remediation guidelines, justification letters, and screening level and quantitative ERAs
  • Water well and groundwater assessments
  • Regulatory submissions
  • Responsible for project coordination, cost control and project scoping to ensure effectively versatile solutions are developed to meet client's regulatory needs and budgets
  • Responsible for building both internal and external relationships within Vertex, with regulators and clients to effectively develop and manage projects within the environmental business unit.

  • This position will be based out of our Sherwood Park or Calgary, Alberta offices or surrounding areas
