Position: Director, Patient Care and Professional Practice

Status: Temporary Full Time – one year with possible extension

Department: Senior Leadership & Professional Practice

Union Association: Non-Union

Salary: $63.83 - $76.90 per hour

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President & CNE, the Director of Patient Care Programs & Professional Practice will have a strategic and operational role, and accountability for Patient flow, allied health, Mental health – inpatient and outpatient and Professional practice. The role will foster an environment that supports the organization's mission, vision and values. Ensure goals and objectives are developed and executed in alignment with BGH's vision, values and strategic priorities. The Director of Patient Care Programs & Professional Practice will take a lead in ensuring professional practice is supported in all clinical areas, ensuring that all staff are working to their full scope of professional practice. Plays a lead role in on boarding new staff through orientation. Leads orientation, learning and development for non-clinical staff. Supports student clinical placement and coordination of related activities. Ensures policies support best practice and are updated regularly.

The Director will ensure ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and patient centred care by actively promoting and continuing to advance best practices and high-quality services, both within and outside of the hospital. The Director will play a key role as an influential expert liaising with the clinical leaders across the organization to enable content, high standards of evidence-based care to the client/patient population. In addition to daily oversight of multiple programs, the Director will ensure the delivery of several initiatives designed to yield high quality care for patients and their families. Additionally, the Director will build upon previous/current successes of the Programs, developing the staff and clinical leaders, setting client centric goals and giving them clarity of purpose as the Program continues to evolve, exceed standards of care/practice.

Requirements:

Education/Specific Training Requirements:

  • Current Registration with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Masters degree in a related field Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning and professional development as evidenced by participation in programs, courses, seminars that enhance skills and knowledge in both interprofessional teams and leadership.

Experience:

  • 7 or more years of Nursing experience, including five or more years in a leadership role
  • Experience in developing, implementing and maintaining interprofessional practice standards and quality control measures in a health care environment

Skills/ Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of strategic and operational planning, management principles and research-based practices.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement, financial practices and risk management principles.
  • Demonstrated strong financial and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and interpersonal skills that can be employed in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • History of building constructive and effective relationships and gaining credibility across disciplines, divisions, departments and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and tactically evaluate and implement sophisticated programs and initiatives.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement and continuing education
  • Consulting and negotiating skills
  • Ability to think strategically at the organizational, program, unit and individual level
  • Broad knowledge of overall hospital structure, operating policies and decision-making processes
  • Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act, standards of professional practice and codes of ethics, health care consent and ethical implications of care delivery
  • Broad understanding of the health care system, related issues and trends, policies and legislation
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse management and employee groups and individuals
  • Knowledge of management principles and theories
  • Knowledge of research techniques and processes
  • Knowledge of external professional communities and associations, such as the regulated colleges and associations, Professional Practice Network of Ontario
  • Ability to adapt to change and to implement and manage change and facilitate its acceptance by others
