West Fraser offers a range of exciting career opportunities for individuals seeking challenging and rewarding careers. Our High-Level Division in Alberta is currently recruiting for a Casual Safety Technician.

Reporting to the Safety Resource, the Safety Technician will assist in the implementation and maintenance of our site health and safety programs and develop the safety culture through active onsite implementation. The Safety Technician has a proactive mindset by prioritizing the reduction of harm to employees, environment, and facilities.

What You'll Do:

  • Educated on legislation and corporate policies regarding workplace safety and makes recommendations that enhance workplace safety and well-being.
  • Perform various worksite inspections and audits, and provide coaching and support for all corrective actions.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency when gathering safety data, and preparing reports as required.
  • Collaborate on all safety program elements including ergonomics, working at heights, confined space, hazardous materials including maintenance of the program documents, safe work procedures and guidelines.
  • Strengthen and implement health and safety programs, including standard operating procedures, policies and training to mitigate risk, optimize worker's health and safety and foster a positive occupational health and safety culture.
  • Administer risk assessments related to jobs performed (Job Hazard Analysis) and new equipment introductions.
  • Contribute to the safe execution of maintenance and shutdown operational tasks.
  • Support employees with managing hazard identifications in Intelex.
  • Manage safety devices, protective equipment, and confined space equipment to ensure their proper use.
  • Provide safety orientation and training for new employees, and ongoing training for existing staff.
  • Attend training and conferences to keep current with current developments and changing requirements in the safety area.
  • Collaborate with Advanced First Aiders to monitor and ensure appropriate medical supply inventory is maintained.
  • Engage and influence decision-makers and workers to comply with health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Act as a resource on the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Support and backfill coverage for the Safety Coordinator as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills:

  • Technical including MS Office, with the ability to learn systems and programs, as required.
  • Analytical skills to effectively assess safety protocols, identify risks, and propose improvements.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple work activities, and function within tight time schedules.
  • Demonstrates integrity, with a strong emphasis on maintaining confidentiality.
  • Communication skills, with a positive attitude and optimistic outlook – building a collaborate team-focused environment.
  • Public speaking and delivering course material to all class sizes.
  • Educates others on the importance and value of health & safety.
  • Commitment to adherence with safety guidelines, and cognizant of safety risks.
  • Experience in the forestry or manufacturing industry is considered an asset.

  • The salary range for this position may vary depending on experience, education, and location.
