Overview:

The Mental Therapist reports to the Team Leader, Counselling and Treatment Program. The Mental Health Therapist is expected to work as a member of a team and is expected to participate in clinical and peer supervision.

Qualifications:

  • BSW, MSW or MA in Counselling Psychology preferred or Masters level training in Occupational Therapy or Nursing.
  • Membership in good standing in a College or Association which governs the health profession
  • Knowledge of mental health/mental illness, and mental health difficulties
  • Highly developed screening, and assessment skills
  • Understanding of the Recovery Philosophy
  • Leadership skills
  • Training and applied abilities in a variety of treatment modalities; CBT, RET, Narrative, Trauma, EMDR
  • Therapy, recording, and evaluation skills
  • Case management and advocacy skills
  • Professionalism in the performance of duties
  • Working knowledge of community resources, and agencies
  • Ability to build community linkages and networks to ensure planning and delivery of individualized treatment plans
  • Cultural Competence for diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently and self motivated
  • Computer literacy and recording skills

Duties:

  • Adherence to all policies of Canadian Mental Health Association Kenora Branch
  • Assurance of confidentiality of all client, personnel, and organizational records and information
  • Thorough screening and assessment of client problems in living, mental health difficulties, etc.
  • In consultation with the client(s), the development and implementation of a treatment plan and evaluation of treatment goals
  • Maintenance of client files, data files, and updating of client information consistent with regulating college and Canadian Mental Health Association, Kenora Branch policies and procedures.
  • Intake functions including administration and scoring of screening tools, and where indicated referral to other community agencies and services
  • Case Management functions including linkages and information sharing with referral agents and sources, liaison with “circle of care” (PHIPA) and other community providers
  • Knowledge of screening and assessment tools and their applications
  • Provision of treatment utilizing evidence based best and promising practices
  • Advocacy
  • Education of client, family and community
  • Development and facilitation of therapy, treatment, skills enhancement or education groups
  • Participate and promote interagency collaboration and integration
  • Clinical supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Collection and data entry of all MHOLTC required client centered data
  • Participate in clinical team meetings and staff meetings as scheduled
  • Monitor program policies and procedures to assure their applicability to evidence based best practice and CMHA philosophy
  • Draft all necessary correspondence/service plans/reports
  • Participate on specific Committees or task or work groups as assigned by the Supervisor
  • Provide a safe environment by ensuring adherences to Workplace Health and Safety Regulations and Policies, Infection Control Guidelines, WHIMIS and Safe Work Procedures; including but not limited to Fire, Disaster and Evacuation Plans
  • Ensure client safety and client safety activities are emphasized throughout orientation of new staff members
  • Support an environment which avoids, prevents and corrects all activities or actions which may result in an adverse outcome in the delivery of mental health services
  • Participate in administrative and office functions as needed
  • Participate in training and educational opportunities
  • Responsible for self-care including awareness of and addressing the effects of vicarious traumatization
  • Other duties as required
