Pivot HR Services is pleased to present this Mechanical Engineer role on behalf of our valued client, Next Hydrogen.

About us:
We are experts in water electrolysis. Founded in 2008, we believe strongly in the greening of industrial processes, transportation systems, and energy systems. From the start, our proven and experienced technology development team targeted the high cost of hydrogen generation from electricity sources, including renewable energy at scale. Our team has a combined 60+ years in water electrolysis and has dedicated the last 12 years to revolutionizing the design architecture of the electrolyser and has been awarded 39 patents (with more pending) across multiple jurisdictions.

Role Overview:
Reporting to the Systems Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of electrolyzer systems, contributing to both new product development and continuous improvement of existing systems. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams from engineering, manufacturing, and operations, engaging in all phases of system design, from concept to execution. The Mechanical Engineer ensures that designs meet industry standards and regulatory requirements, while supporting various stages of procurement, manufacturing, and testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams (process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & controls) to develop and optimize system designs.
  • Create and review Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Perform system calculations, including heat and mass balances, and optimize mechanical and process equipment.
  • Ensure system designs comply with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, CSA, API, NFPA, ANSI, ASTM, ISO, IEC).
  • Prepare and review equipment lists, BOMs, and technical specifications; support procurement and manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in cross-functional design and safety reviews, such as Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and Safety Reviews (PSR).
  • Develop procedures for assembly, testing, installation, and maintenance; contribute to test and inspection plans.
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, and field-testing activities; provide feedback and revise designs accordingly.
  • Manage individual projects, ensuring timely execution and successful delivery of objectives.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating closely with teams across Product Development, Project Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, and other departments.
  • Contribute to budgeting estimates for systems and equipment, and support testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting in-factory and on-site.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in process and mechanical system design, including hands-on work with piping, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Strong technical knowledge of pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, and control valves, with experience in equipment sizing and optimization.
  • Proficiency in industry-related codes and standards (e.g., ASME, CSA, API).
  • Experience with process hazard analysis methods (e.g., DFMEA, HAZOP) and familiarity with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Strong problem-solving skills with experience in quality management systems (QMS) and high-pressure gas systems.
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to present complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily office-based with periodic visits to the adjacent manufacturing and testing facility.
  • Light to moderate travel within the GTA for site visits and field support.
  • Occasional requirement to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety shoes, glasses, and hard hats.

Next Hydrogen is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We welcome applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds.
