At the SNP-STEAM ACADEMY, students earn a high school diploma, an industry-recognized college diploma, and gain relevant work experience in their field of study. The school creates a seamless program for students to acquire the academic, technical, and workplace skills and knowledge that employers need.

Function & Overview

Reporting to the Principal – STEAM Academy, the Teacher understands the vision behind the unique SNP-STEAM Academy program. In addition to being certified to teach Cayuga language at a secondary school level, the Teacher will be experienced in work-based learning and will participate in continuing professional development opportunities to support STEAM Academy programming. The Teacher is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga'nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

Duties

The duties of the Teacher include, without limitation:

Planning, Developing & Organizing Instruction

  • Being responsible for effective instruction and evaluation of the progress of pupils in assigned subjects, as per the Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines;
  • Preparing daily teaching plans and outlines as are required by the Principal and submitting the plans and outlines to the Principal upon request;
  • Establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicating those objectives to students through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations in assigned subject areas;
  • Preparing materials and resources for daily classroom activities prior to the start of each lesson;
  • Utilizing differentiated teaching methods, instructional materials, and assessments to meet students' varying needs and interests;

Implementing Assessment

  • Reporting to the principal on the progress of pupils upon request and during designated reporting times;
  • Ensuring that report cards are fully and properly completed and processed in accordance with the Ministry of Education Report Card Guidelines, Grades 9-12;
  • Preparing, administering, and grading tests and assignments, as per the Ministry of Education document, Growing Success, to evaluate students' progress, and providing timely and comprehensive feedback to students and families;

Student Success

  • In coordination with the STEAM Academy student success team, developing individualized student academic schedules, contributing to the development of Individual Education Plans, ensuring each student's plan meets the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and college diploma requirements;
  • Performing additional duties, such as those normally associated with the graduation of pupils or being actively involved in informational and student recruitment sessions when requested;
  • Conferring with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioural and academic problems;

Classroom Management & Safety

  • Cooperating with the Principal and STEAM Academy staff to establish and maintain consistent disciplinary practices in the school, with respect to our school code of conduct and restorative justice procedures;
  • Carrying out the supervisory duties assigned to the teacher by the principal, including in class, extracurricular, break or lunchtime supervisions and out of class excursions;
  • Being present in the classroom or teaching area and ensuring that the classroom or teaching area is ready for the reception of pupils at least fifteen minutes before the commencement of classes in the school in the morning and, where applicable, five minutes before the commencement of classes in the school in the afternoon;
  • Ensuring that all reasonable safety procedures are carried out in courses and activities for which the teacher is responsible, including but not limited to all fire safety procedures, lockdown procedures, shop and machinery safety procedures, kitchen safety protocols, and all other content specific safety procedures;

Community Connections & Professional Development

  • Assisting the principal in maintaining close affiliation with the community, including taking part in regular meetings with pupils' parents or guardians, as well as participating in community events where applicable;
  • Using technology, hands-on activities, and Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and resources to enrich curriculum and instruction;
  • Attending all Professional Development sessions throughout the school year in order to fulfill Ministry of Education standards in granting credits towards graduation;
  • Actively participating in the STEAM Academy staff summer orientation program, annually;

General Administration

  • Professionally and astutely supporting the STEAM Academy Principal and staff through actively participating in Ministry of Education inspections;
  • Maintaining accurate and complete student records as required by the Ministry of Education and STEAM Academy administrative guidelines;
  • Utilizing the school's Student Information System and the Learning Management System to maintain accurate student attendance and appropriate academic records; and
  • Other related duties, as required.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Cayuga language proficiency;
  • Bachelor of Education degree and Ontario College of Teacher's certification, (considered assets); and
  • Experience using D2L and Microsoft TEAMS.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • A background in, or knowledge of, STEM/STEAM Pathways;
  • Knowledge of current research and instructional best practices;
  • Superior Instructional leadership skills;
  • A general and current knowledge of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on written expression (i.e., faultless spelling and grammar, and professional style);
  • Sound interpersonal skills including communication, organization, negotiation, confidentiality, and professional judgement;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage schedules, portfolios, and timelines, to meet demanding deadlines;
  • Capacity to work both independently and in a team setting, demonstrating Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga'nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind);
  • Demonstrated familiarity with standard desktop computing programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and database applications, on the Windows 2010 (or later) operating system; and
  • Contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga'nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

Criminal Record Check

The Teacher will be required to provide an original Criminal Background check – vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work at STEAM Academy and every three (3) years thereafter, and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by August 31 every year in between which they are employed by Six Nations Polytechnic.
