This position is with our Good Shepherd Centre's- MEN'S CENTRE

Reporting to the Kitchen Manager/Kitchen Supervisor, the Cook enhances the dignity and quality of life of our clients, visitors and staff by ensuring that all persons accessing the services of the Kitchen are treated with dignity, respect, hospitality, flexibility and compassion.

Availability, Flexibility, Adaptability and Hospitality is aided by the preparation and serving of nutritious appetizing meals and snacks, to all those that come to the Centre.

Through responsible leadership and effective role modelling, the Cook is responsible for the demonstration of the Mission, Vision and Values at work within the Good Shepherd Centre.


How You Will Make an Impact

  • To carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission and Values of Good Shepherd Centres.
  • To provide a work ethic in leadership and role modelling of behaviours that demonstrates the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Centres.
  • To provide service in a dignified and respectful manner that reflects the charism of Good Shepherd Centres and which integrates anti-oppression/anti-racism frameworks.
  • To work as an effective team member with other staff of Good Shepherd Centres and volunteers
  • This position is responsible for the preparation, presentation and serving of nutritious and attractive meals with variety, snacks, and any food required for any Programs of Good Shepherd Centres.
  • To maintain and protect the confidentiality of all information obtained through the course of the work, whether it is information obtained from clients, donors, volunteers or staff.
  • Responsible to assist with the safe and timely preparation of all meals, snacks and any foods requested as directed.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of a tidy, clean and safe work area at all times.
  • Responsible to assist in the cleaning of the kitchen and all food storage areas including refrigerators and freezers and maintaining all food areas in such a manner as meets the Health and Safety Standards.
  • Responsible to assist in the rotation of perishables and utilization of food before spoilage occurs.
  • Responsible for the preparation of nutritious snacks for Dormitory Guests and for the making of an adequate supply of bagged lunches for clients when meals are not available.
  • Responsible to assist in the receiving, storing and retrieving for use all foods, whether purchased, or donated, as directed.
  • Required to operate all kitchen equipment and to ensure that all equipment is used in a safe manner. If equipment appears to be malfunctioning, stop using immediately and report the matter to the Supervisor or designate.
  • Responsible to perform all duties in a safe and conscientious manner, always ensuring that Health and Safety Standards are met at all times.
  • To attend Staff meeting unless discussed prior to the meeting with the Manager/Supervisor.
  • Will be required to perform any other duties related to the Ministries of the Good Shepherd Centres as directed by the Kitchen Manager/Kitchen Supervisor, and/or Director of the Good Shepherd Centre or delegate.
  • To observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules and work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to minimize risk to clients, staff and others as well as to the property of the Good Shepherd Centres;

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • Minimum academic requirement is a 2-year diploma normally acquired from a recognized Culinary Management/Food Services Program, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in the hospitality industry.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Availability, Flexibility, Adaptability, Hospitality and Dignity.
  • A valid drivers' license and clean abstract is a necessity for this role
  • CPR/First Aid certification and WHMIS training.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt in a fast paced and changing work environment.
  • Creativity and flexibility in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Hospitable in dealings with clients/public/volunteers/staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Available and responsive to the needs of others.
  • Respectful and compassionate demeanor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Subject to the requirements of the Human Rights Code, a police clearance report is required to determine the suitability to be employed in a Social Service Agency. It shall be at the sole discretion of Good Shepherd to assess the suitability of employment based on the criminal reference status of the employee.
