The Field Underwriter is responsible for achieving Commercial Lines growth and profitability objectives. Field Underwriters accomplish this through successful risk evaluation leading to development of new business in accordance with the company's underwriting philosophy. A critical component of this role is a proven track record of relationship building, negotiation and selling skills that lead to effective production of new business opportunities. The Field Underwriter must be a team player and exhibit expertise in Commercial Property and consistently exercise maturity, good judgment and foster positive professional relationships with brokers. This position requires a significant amount of travel within the operating region and attendance at various industry events.

What will you do?

  • Manage assigned territory and broker groups
  • Grow the book by developing and selecting new business and evaluate in accordance with company underwriting philosophy, established authority parameters, as well as written/verbal procedures and guidelines.
  • Provide accurate and thorough education to brokers about the company's risk selection philosophy and pricing philosophy
  • Achieves company growth objectives by recognizing sales opportunities, soliciting desirable business, and diligent follow-up on quoted business.
  • Determines the appropriate course of action for broker enquiries, delegating to underwriting and/or processing assistants for handling.
  • Attend industry functions, conventions, association events
  • Review key production metrics and identify areas of opportunity to drive additional production

What will you need to succeed?

  • 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience
  • 3+ years of business development and sales experience
  • Regular travels to brokers providing field underwriting and quoting services
  • Community college diploma in the field of finance, business, or insurance is required
  • Undergraduate degree is preferred
  • Enrollment in or completion of the CIP (FCIP) designation
  • Exhibits teamwork, cooperation and a strong sense of urgency
  • Maintains an organized approach to managing the multiple tasks of a high volume production expectations
  • Proven experience providing genuine customer service to broker partners by presenting commercial insurance solutions specific to the needs of the client
  • Proficient underwriting skills, sound judgement, decision making, negotiation and analytical ability.
