Job Description

The Director, Medical Affairs and Education, works with the Chief of Staff/Executive Vice President, Medical and Education Affairs (COS), and Vice President, Academics, to develop, implement and monitor effective planning, processes and governance for credentialed professional staff and learners at Osler.

Accountabilities:

  • Provides leadership and vision for systems, structures and processes that support positive and effective professional staff relationships including human resources planning; leadership recruitment and development; talent management; performance reviews; management of professional staff complaints; and professional staff recruitment, orientation, retention and well-being
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures, bylaws, rules and regulations that align with Osler's Vision, Mission and Values and ensures compliance with the Public Hospitals Act and other relevant legislation (ECFAA, PHIPA, FHIPAA, etc.)
  • Ensures coordination and facilitation of decision-making processes within the teams to ensure compliance with all policy, procedures and legal requirements
  • Responsible for the recruitment, development and succession of team members for stability, credibility and to maximize employee potential and foster high ethical standards in meeting Osler's Vision, Mission and Values
  • Act as an internal resource with the support of People Services for a range of physician issues and events and in advising on risk reduction/mitigation and strategies to ensure solutions to operational issues
  • Acts as trusted advisor to leadership to ensure proactive discussions about emergent issues
  • Maintains an in-depth understanding of current trends, current jurisprudence, legislative updates and best practices in areas of oversight
  • Establishes an annual work plan/goals for the Medical Affairs and Education teams to ensure alignment to Osler's Vision, Mission and Values
  • Maintains high work quality standards and holds others accountable for achieving results
  • Motivates others to translate ideas into actions and outcomes
  • Provides resources, removes obstacles to support others in achieving outcomes
  • Anticipates future needs within areas of responsibilities and considers future impacts and trends accurately
  • Oversees the Medical Affairs and Education office budgets including all professional staff leadership stipends
  • Provides subject matter expertise to Medical Affairs and Education teams, chiefs, heads of service and other leaders related to professional staff governance; credentialing; contracts and remuneration; human resources processes; and occupational health and safety
  • Leads and guides with the support of the team the development and implementation of Osler's educational mandate, including its role as the anchor site for the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine (TMU), while supporting McMaster University programs
  • Ensures the seamless integration and coordination of educational activities across Osler, aligning them with organizational goals and objectives
  • Collaborates with educational leaders at TMU, McMaster and other academic institutions to enhance and expand educational programs and initiatives
  • Builds and maintains strategic partnerships with educational and industry stakeholders to expand Osler's education footprint
  • Strong accountability for all performance and service delivery within the Medical Staff office and Education office teams
  • Provides operational oversight and leadership for the Medical Affairs and Education office, ensuring efficiency and alignment with organizational goals
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in health administration, MBA and/or education
  • Proven leadership experience with five to seven years in health care or academic settings, demonstrating strong operational management and oversight of high-functioning, multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience leading teams through growth or change with the ability to implement and maintain high operational standards
  • Practical experience in change management, successfully leading organizational transformations and improving processes to enhance efficiency and service delivery
  • Strong ability to identify areas for improvement and drive process enhancements that result in better workflows and performance
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and mentoring staff with a track record of supporting professional development, performance management and fostering team growth
  • Skilled in delivering feedback and promoting collaboration while managing career progression and overcoming challenges
  • Thorough understanding of professional standards and the role of regulatory colleges
  • Expertise in budget management, financial reporting and tracking for educational programs, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with organizational compliance standards
  • Strong change leadership and relationship-building skills with a track record of developing high-performing teams
  • Experience with strategic planning, coaching, mentoring and managing formal processes including recruitment, credentialing and onboarding
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to convey complex information clearly to physicians, educators and key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to build organizational capacity and ensure succession planning to mitigate risks to the organization
  • Experience in resolving physician complaints and implementing collaborative solutions with various departments across the organization
  • Ability to provide strategic guidance and oversight in the development of processes and policies to support medical and educational governance
  • Proven capability in managing compliance with hospital bylaws, legislation, and regulations such as the Public Hospitals Act, PHIPA and ECFAA
  • Skilled in collaborating with educational institutions and building partnerships to enhance and expand educational offerings
  • Extensive knowledge of university policies and regulations concerning learners, including compliance with affiliation agreements, policies around student and resident placement and learner governance
  • Experience with oversight of credentialing, privileging and governance processes ensuring security and integrity of data and compliance with professional standards
  • Ability to develop and present educational and operational materials to corporate chiefs and other senior leadership
  • Capable of guiding chiefs and physician leaders in fulfilling their responsibilities and understanding their roles within the organization
  • Experience with operational management, including workflow optimization, staff development and team management within medical and educational offices
  • Familiarity with managing legal and regulatory matters, including medical-legal cases and developing risk mitigation strategies
  • Flexibility and ability to travel between Osler sites as needed

Hours: Currently days (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

This is an Onsite First role: Roles that frequently support direct patient care and have dedicated hours when they are available to patients, team members and/or other partners

Annual salary:
Minimum: $146,445.00
Maximum: $183,046.50
