About DeNova:
DeNova is an early-stage biotechnology company based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, dedicated to developing socially and environmentally responsible food solutions through microbial fermentation. DeNova's diverse and collaborative team is currently focused on scaling its proprietary continuous fermentation technology and bringing its all-natural, nutrient-dense Single Cell Protein (SCP) product, Psomi, to market within two years. DeNova, a female-founded and led organization, is deeply committed to addressing complex challenges and developing innovative approaches to enhance the resiliency and sustainability of our global food systems.
Role Overview:
DeNova is seeking a highly motivated Downstream Processing (DSP) Scientist to join our Pilot Plant Team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years hands-on experience working with industrial DSP systems and specialized knowledge related to biomass separation, filtration, and drying technologies. The DSP Scientist will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop and implement effective strategies that drive process improvements and ensure the successful transition from pilot to large scale commercial production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Process Development and Optimization:
- Design, implement, and optimize DSP techniques for large-volume processing compatible with high-yield continuous fermentation systems.
- Develop and refine efficient methods for biomass separation, and enhance UHT processing and drying techniques to improve product quality and functionality.
- Conduct experiments to determine optimal drying conditions for microbial biomass while achieving targeted physical properties of the final dried product.
- Apply hands-on expertise with downstream processing equipment, including centrifuges and dryers, to ensure effective operation.
- Continuously evaluate and enhance processes to improve quality, yield, and cost-efficiency.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure seamless integration between continuous fermentation and downstream processes.
- Explore implementation of real-time monitoring and quality control systems for continuous downstream operations.
- Scale-Up & Tech Transfer:
- Lead scale-up of DSP processes from pilot and industrial scales.
- Contribute to the evaluation, procurement, and implementation of large-scale downstream processing equipment for commercial production.
- Work with external partners and contract manufacturers to ensure successful technology transfer and scale-up.
- Sustainability and Cost Optimization:
- Develop strategies to improve resource efficiency, maximize water reuse, and minimize energy consumption in downstream processes.
- Explore and implement techniques for byproduct valorization and waste stream management.
- Develop methods to reduce process water consumption and enhance water recirculation systems.
- Contribute to the execution of techno-economic analyses to optimize process costs and identify areas for improvement.
- Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with fermentation scientists to understand and adapt to upstream process changes.
- Collaborate with product development teams to ensure downstream processes meet evolving product requirements.
- Liaise with regulatory affairs to ensure compliance with food safety standards and support regulatory submissions.
- Data Management & Analysis:
- Implement advanced data analytics and modeling techniques to optimize process performance.
- Utilize statistical tools for process validation and continuous improvement.
- Develop predictive models to enhance process control and product consistency.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Maintain detailed records of all processes and experiments.
- Develop and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all downstream operations.
- Ensure compliance with GMP, food safety regulations, and other relevant industry standards as needed.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and regulatory documentation.
Key Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's (BSc, BEng) or Master's (MSc) degree in Biochemistry, Process Biochemistry, Biochemical or Chemical Engineering, Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.
- Experience: 3+ years of practical experience in downstream processing within the biotechnology or food technology industry, ideally with expertise in centrifugation, filtration, and drying.
