Purpose of the Position:

The B'saanibamaadsiwin Community Development Worker plays a key role in strengthening the connection between Indigenous communities and essential mental health services. This position involves working closely with Indigenous Mental Health Workers to deliver impactful presentations and develop resources that are both culturally informed and community-focused. The role encompasses active participation in research, educational outreach, and creating resources that elevate mental health awareness, substance use prevention, and health promotion within Indigenous communities.

This position is ideal for a candidate with creativity and a deep understanding of Indigenous mental health and addiction topics, who is passionate about designing culturally sensitive presentations and materials. These resources empower program staff and community members to engage meaningfully, ensuring that messages about Indigenous mental health and addiction resonate with respect and understanding. The B'saanibamaadsiwin Community Development Worker will also coordinate program events and build strong internal and external relationships to enhance service delivery.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a human service or health science discipline relevant to the position is an asset, but not required. Equivalency will be considered for education combined with relevant work and life experience.
  • Extensive awareness of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures, and a strong sensitivity to Indigenous mental health and wellness needs.
  • In-depth knowledge of First Nations, urban, and rural Indigenous communities within the Muskoka and Parry Sound Districts.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is a strong asset.
  • Ability to develop culturally informed educational resources and present on topics related to mental health and substance use in Indigenous contexts.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as cooperatively within a team environment in a rural setting
  • Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, the Internet, and data management software with the ability to learn new technologies
  • Strong commitment to the rights and dignity of individuals experiencing mental health challenges and substance use disorders.
  • A willingness to serve clients within the communities of the District of Muskoka and Parry Sound
  • A valid Ontario G or G2 driver's license, a safe and reliable means of transportation, and appropriate insurance for work purposes on your vehicle with a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability coverage.
  • Bilingual in French/English language considered an asset
  • Indigenous Cultural Awareness and Education is a requirement
  • Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays as needed.

Salary scale: $29.26 to $38.32 per hour commensurate with qualifications and experience

Benefits include: optional enrolment in a Registered Retirement plan with HOOPP where contributions start on date of hire.
