West Fraser offers a range of exciting career opportunities for individuals seeking challenging and rewarding careers. Our High-Level Division in Alberta is currently recruiting for a Process Control Technician.

Reporting to the Electrical Supervisor, the Process Control Technician will work as a team to supporting operations and the electrical department, with troubleshooting and improving process control systems.

You'll Do:

  • Research and reference software and hardware products and services, to support procurement and development effort
  • Analyze process control data and parameters, to identify causes of deviation and implement corresponding solutions
  • Commission and troubleshoot electrical, instrumentation and control equipment
  • Configure and develop industrial computer network systems, for HMI and PLC systems
  • Optimize and improve the reliability of process control systems
  • Troubleshoot programs on PLCs and electronic Operator Interfaces, and check the configurations of soft starter, VFD and other instruments
  • Perform field startup tasks
  • Coordinate instrumentation calibration and maintenance support
  • Ensure the upkeep of all required documentation blueprints, schematics, databases, and process control manuals
  • Generate technical reports, operating instructions, and carry out training and orientation involving new installations or modifications
  • Review, develop and execute new electrical, instrumentation and automation designs and programs for the upgrading of conventional controls
  • Read and interpret equipment specifications, engineering drawings, blueprints, charts, and tables or study sample parts as required
  • Provide feedback to the supervisor on any discrepancies found in the drawing or documents against actual installation
  • Check spare parts status and provide feedback to the supervisor on any discrepancy against the actual stock status in technical store
  • Participate in an on-call system to provide resources to the production team during off hours
  • Demonstrate positive and supportive peer-to-peer leadership in efficiency and technology
  • Train operators, end users, technologists, and other staff as required

You have:

  • Industrial Automation & Controls Technician certification, or education in a related field (electrical, instrumentation) with relevant experience.
  • Minimum three years' experience with process control and instrumentation is preferred.
  • Experience working with smart field devices, Allen Bradley CLX (motion control), PLC5 PLCs, VFDs and instrumentation such as control valves, process analyzers, flow, pressure and temperature transmitters, and PID and tuning controls.
  • Strong technical skills including MS Office, with the ability to learn systems and programs, as required.
  • Reading & interpreting electrical diagrams and service manuals to determine work procedures.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting techniques to solve software issues.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple work activities and function within tight time schedules.
  • Effective communication skills, with a positive attitude and optimistic outlook – building a collaborate team-focused environment.
  • Commitment to adherence with safety guidelines, and cognizant of safety risks.
  • Experience in the forestry or manufacturing industry is considered an asset.
