The Agency

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.

The Program

New Ties (NewT): Safer Communities through Support for Youth Exiting Gangs is a voluntary program that accepts referrals from correctional facilities, law enforcement agencies, Probation Officers, Parole Officers, community agencies, School Guidance Counsellors, and potential participants themselves. We target participants between ages 12 and 26, who have either expressed a desire to disengage from street-gang involvement and are committed to a change in lifestyle or are on the periphery of joining gangs.

The Position

The Caseworker will work with program participants to get connected to appropriate services and resources, achieve independence from gang connection, and successfully reintegrate into the community. This client-centred case management approach includes: Creating client-centered case management plans, navigating relationships with natural supports, goal setting, crisis resolution, accessing addiction and/or mental health counseling, accessing financial support, basic needs, securing affordable and safe housing, cultural connections, systems navigation, finding and maintaining employment/education, and creating positive lifestyle opportunities.
