The Shop Welder will work independently and/or in small team environments performing welding and fabricating in accordance with industry standards. The work will take place mainly in the Brandon shop however some travel/field work may be required.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform general and specialized design and repair work to various types of equipment in the shop; utilize various welding techniques including MIG, ARC, MAW, etc.
- Perform any cutting, burning, welding, grinding, soldering, and brazing associated with the removal or application of components
- Provide training and testing to welders in other departments as required
- Ensure all work associated with rush repairs, and road work equipment is completed quickly and efficiently
- Participate in all daily job briefings, complete daily reports/logs, and document and report all hazards to the Shop Supervisor
- Ensure general maintenance on equipment is performed and logbooks are accurately completed; promptly address and report all safety concerns and equipment problems to the supervisor
- Maintain sufficient inventory to complete welding projects; notify supervisor when supplies are needed
- Work closely with the Shop Supervisor and Engineering Track Services Managers to ensure alignment of services
- Ensure safety is always the top priority and the shop environment is kept clean and free of hazards
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
- Possess a good mechanical aptitude; skilled in various welding methods used in the industry and proficient with measuring tools
- Demonstrate initiative to work independently, and organize and prioritize workload leading to successful delivery of services in a constantly changing environment
- Ability to operate and work on a variety of equipment and perform labour intensive duties in all types of weather conditions; travel to field environments to perform repairs when required
- Comfortable working under pressure and within tight deadlines while still producing quality work
- Communicate effectively both in oral and written format; learn and use new technology
- Ability to hold and maintain a valid Class 5 driver's license; some travel and overtime may be required
Education & Experience
- Completion & /or enrollment in a welding program from a recognized institution
- Experience working in a welder/fabricator position required
- Experience designing, drafting and executing fabrication plans
