We are seeking a Technical Manager, reporting to the President.

This role will oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of fire-resistant plastic composite technologies. This role involves leading R&D projects and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful production and commercialization of innovative products. A strong background in polymer science, materials engineering, fire safety regulations, and plastics processing (e.g., injection molding, extrusion) is essential. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing technology development projects in the plastics industry and ensuring that products are high-performing, high quality and commercially viable.

This position is based out of 649 Welham Rd, Barrie, ON L4N 0B7

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday

Base Compensation: $95,000 to $105,000 per annum (flexible based on level of experience)

Key areas of responsibility:

Technology Development & Innovation:

  • Lead the research and development of new fire-resistant plastic composites, ensuring they meet both performance and processing requirements
  • Drive innovation by identifying new technologies, materials, and processes that can be integrated into product offerings
  • Ensure all products meet relevant fire safety regulations and industry standards and are easily processed by injection molding and extrusion techniques
  • Responsible for creation and maintenance of key product/material documentation, including Safety Data Sheet (“SDS”), Technical Data Sheet (“TDS”) and regulatory statements (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Substances (“ROGS”), Prop 65, etc.)
  • Manage testing by third-party labs of materials to industry specifications

Project Management:

  • Manage multiple R&D projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams, including R&D, manufacturing, quality, and sales, to ensure project alignment and successful outcomes
  • Manage the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (“SRED”) claims and any other government grant process, ensuring that the maximum credit amount is received
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, timelines, and budgets

Technical Support & Problem Solving:

  • Provide expert technical support to internal teams, including procurement (in identifying alternate sources of supply, etc.), operations and sales, and external customers. This includes travel to suppliers and customer sites as needed
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues related to both material performance and processing challenges, providing solutions to meet customer and production needs
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, technologies, and regulations related to fire-resistant materials and processing techniques

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Collaborate closely with customers, suppliers, and industry partners to understand market needs and translate them into technical solutions that are easily manufacturable
  • Work with operations on key areas of focus, such as product quality, scale-up projects to drive operational efficiencies and all R&D aspects of ISO-9001
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, reports, and proposals to stakeholders
  • Communicate project progress, risks, and opportunities to senior management

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Polymer Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. PhD preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in the plastics industry, with a focus on fire-resistant materials
  • Proven experience in managing R&D projects and leading technical teams
  • Strong knowledge of fire safety standards and regulations (e.g., UL 94, NFPA)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think critically and strategically
  • Strong project management skills, with experience using project management tools and methodologies
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in developing composites for the automotive, aerospace, or electronics industries
  • Familiarity with process engineering and scale-up from lab to production
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and design of experiments (“DOE”)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and competency to see projects through to completion
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Technologically proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook & Teams)
  • A mature, self-starter who remains calm under pressure and is comfortable working with minimal oversight and tight deadlines
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication
