Qualifications: Eligible candidates must have previous experience and knowledge of fitness, exercise techniques, physical education, health or related fields – previous experience instructing programs or coaching is an asset; and ability to work in indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as flexible hours including daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays. First Aid/CPR-C certification considered an asset. Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Special Interest Instructor - Fitness
DEPARTMENT: Community Services Dept. DIVISION: Recreation Services
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Responsible for the instruction of a fitness program; focusing on techniques and building endurance to registrations and participants of all ages and abilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Recreation Services Supervisor
INDIRECT SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Recreation Programmer – Adult Programs and Special Events
DIRECTION EXERCISED:
None
WORKING PROCEDURES:
- Plan and deliver lessons for all ages assigned.
- Setup and take down of program equipment and facilitate all programs/classes assigned.
- Ability to plan the course content and arrangement of instruction for various levels of skill and ability;
- Ability to teach in a class/group setting;
- Instructs registered participants in fitness foundations, knowledge, skills and techniques, leads with confidence.
- Develops and implements lesson plans and course curriculums, while measuring outcomes
- Demonstrates basic skills in physical fitness and health education as well as nutrition, warmup/cool down, goal setting and other wellness topics
- Monitors participants growth in the program and adapts lessons as necessary
- Completes administrative tasks a such as communication with Recreation Programmer for class lists, attendance sheets, incident reports and class evaluations
- Demonstrates a high level of customer service and provides this service on the front-line of operation and does so in an efficient, courteous and respectful manner;
- Meet the needs of each participant and ensure adequate safety while facilitating the program.
- Interacts with participants, staff and community members and maintains a positive and effective working relationship
- Follows up with participants at the end of each session regarding their progression;
- Performs administrative tasks to support the program as assigned by the Recreation Programmer or designate;
- Ensures all participants are wearing the proper, standard equipment required for participating in their running class (i.e. running shoes, appropriate clothing, layers etc.)
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings
- Participate in the Town's Health and Safety Program and follow safety practices in work methods and procedures; observes and complies with all relevant Health & Safety regulations.
- Immediately report all concerns (including product), suspicious occurrences and hazardous conditions to the Recreation Services Supervisor or designate.

SKILL/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Previous experience and Knowledge of fitness, exercise techniques, physical education, health or related fields
- Previous experience instructing programs or coaching is considered an asset;
- Confident in teaching large groups in a classroom setting;
- Ability to work in various work settings (i.e. indoor and outdoor spaces);
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Willingness to work with others and responding constructively to feedback;
- Previous administrative and customer service experience is considered an asset;
- Responsible, courteous, good communication skills;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Ability to work independently without close supervision;
- Effective conflict resolution, problem solving and critical thinking skills;
- Excellent customer service skills to deal effectively with the general public, participants, parents or guardians.
- Must be available to work flexible hours including daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays
- Provide a Vulnerable Sector Police Check;
- First Aid & CPR C is an asset;
