ABOUT THE ROLE: 

The Director, Commercial Operations & Special Projects will provide overall support to Commercial Underwriting & Commercial Lending related to a) Servicer Management, including onboarding, ongoing monitoring, contract review, scorecards, compliance training; b) Projects & Initiatives, including the delivery of ongoing maintenance and enhancement of existing systems, processes, and training in addition to transformational projects, as-is and to-be process definitions, requirements, analysis, solution design, delivery and commercial business support technology roadmaps that align with commercial business needs of the Commercial Underwriting & Commercial Lending business units, and c) Process Improvements & Governance, including guideline and procedure amendments, operational risk event and issues management, audit findings management whether internal, external or regulatory. The Director will be responsible for building a support environment to the Commercial Underwriting and Lending business unit based on best-in-class practices, tools, and processes aimed at delivering an unparalleled employee and customer experience.

In addition:

  • Manage and remediate, in conjunction with business unit Directors, all Internal Audit and other audit/testing findings, as required, from Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Loan Reviews, Compliance Audits, Regulatory Audits, CEO/CFO testing, Risk Control Self Assessments (RCSA) and Operational Risk Events (ORE).
  • Act decisively to move commercial strategies and initiatives forward in a timely manner.
  • Act as business lead for all Commercial Underwriting and Commercial Lending initiatives.
  • Escalate issues/obstacles/trends identified to the VP Commercial Underwriting as appropriate with recommendations/solutions.
  • Assist in building change management plans of varying scope and type; leads or participates in a variety of change management activities including readiness assessments, planning, stakeholder management, execution, evaluation, and sustainment of initiatives.
  • Ensure capacity planning models are developed and performance reported for commercial underwriting and administration.
  • Work effectively with all internal business partners to improve underwriting and administrative systems to maximize effectiveness and achieve excellence.
  • Work closely with BRM to support the business in identifying, assessing, measuring, and mitigating risks and escalating risks and other material issues to the VP, Commercial Underwriting as appropriate.
  • Review and update Mandate, Guidelines and Procedure documents, as required.
  • Evaluate business partners (Agents, Appraisers, Environmental Consultants and Building Condition Assessors) when on-boarding and maintain fraud, quality, and performance metrics where applicable.
  • Point of contact/lead for process improvement initiatives brought on by other departments for the Commercial Underwriting and Lending business unit.
  • Responsible as the Servicer's point of contact in relation to onboarding, ongoing monitoring, contract review and compliance training.
  • Responsible for reviewing and assessing all Servicer onboarding documentation including financial statements, constating documents, policy/procedures, lists for third party specialists (appraisers, ESA consultants, solicitors etc.).
  • Review, maintain and improve the Servicer Management procedures, including onboarding and ongoing monitoring and risk assessments.
  • Review, maintain and improve the Mortgage Participation & Servicing Agreements annually in conjunction with the Servicers, legal counsel and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead, manage and mentor direct reports by providing direction, coaching, and training as required, recognizing performance, and managing non-performance, ensuring individualized objectives for all commercial underwriting and administrative staff is in place and updated as required.
  • Develop tactical strategies in the business to support the overall commercial business strategy and the achievement of objectives by prioritizing workflow, commencing initiatives, and resource planning.

WHAT WE REQUIRE:

  • Authorized to work in Canada
  • Great communication skills
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma, preferably in business management, finance, or related field (university an asset)
  • 10+ years mortgage lending/underwriting experience with increasing responsibility.
  • In depth understanding of commercial lending products, policies/guidelines, and procedures.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to identify risks and remove roadblocks.
  • Solution-focused, takes initiative ensuring self and the team work effectively within established guidelines.
  • Excellent underwriting and analytical skills with ability to make prudent decisions.
  • Strong understanding of the real estate and economic environment.
  • Strong organizational, time-management and ability to manage multiple teams.
