Reporting to the VP, Project Management, the successful candidate will assume responsibility for all aspects of project planning, execution, monitoring and control as well as closing. The Project Manager represents the interests of Surespan Construction Ltd. in interactions with the customer, crews, subcontractors and suppliers, and the general public.
The successful applicant will:
- have a working knowledge of highway and remote access industrial bridges, pile driving, marine and land based infrastructure
- be able to approach situations practically and from the perspective of the on site crew while remaining conscious of project budgets and allowable costs
- have the ability to relate to crew culture to better understand, lead and direct the tasks at hand
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Particular tasks and responsibilities include:
- Read and thoroughly understand the contract.
- Provides overall administrative and technical direction for the project.
- Maintains safety standards in all aspects of the project.
- Contributes as appropriate to the pre-award process of determining project scope, planning and estimating.
- Participates in the development of the project budget and schedule and develops the project execution plan, after being awarded the project.
- Implements procurement policies for subcontracted work and materials/equipment supply, and ensures compliance with agreements entered into. Evaluates all bids and quotations and selects subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensures that the project is constructed in accordance with design, budget and schedule. Monitors and controls progress, costs and budgets throughout the project, and complies with all project reporting procedures. Monitor and regularly report variances in accordance with project controls procedures.
- Implements change management procedures, ensuring clear and concise documentation for any and all changes to scope and delays that impact the work, including but not limited to weather, site access, component delivery, etc.
- Responsible for planning, scheduling and estimating any potential scope changes. Identifies required and optional changes in project scope; negotiates change orders with the customer.
- Responsible for the review and obtaining any interpretation of the project specifications and scope, and developing work plans to execute specifications for all disciplines.
- Selects key personnel for the projects in conjunction with the Superintendent and Operations Coordinator.
- Selects subcontractors for the project, in conjunction with the Superintendent
- Advises the Vice President, Project Management on project status and results in a timely fashion.
- Reviews project's progress with the project staff as the project proceeds.
- Acts to resolve disputes between the company and customer, or company and subcontractors when possible prior to VP Operations involvement.
- Ensures that the project staff understands the company's operating policies and practices, and applies these appropriately.
- Contributes to the overall positive team culture of the organization.
- Effectively contributes to a strong team environment through assisting teammates in accomplishing mutual goals, supporting and promoting team spirit and cooperation.
- Proactively looks for improvement opportunities to job related processes and procedures and communicates through appropriate channels.
- This role will require travel, working extended hours, including a flexible and variable work schedule as needed to meet business objectives.
Education and Experience Required:
The Project Manager shall possess the following minimum education and work experience:
- Experience in contract interpretation.
- Candidate will have a minimum of 5 years' experience in the capacity of Project Manager supplemented by other aspects of construction management including cost estimating.
- Comfort with a corporate structure and the associated administrative and reporting requirements.
- Demonstrates strong customer focus at all times.
- Demonstrates integrity, strong initiative, work ethic, as well as a focus on safety and quality of work on a continuous basis.
- In lieu of post-secondary education, highly experienced individuals will be considered. Post-secondary education is an asset but not required.

The Project Manager shall possess the following skills:
- Ability to understand legal and technical aspects of the contract.
- Organizational skills and time management, project management.
- Effective communication skills both written and verbal for interface with Clients and coworkers.
- Able to work in a team environment (Engineering, Purchasing, Estimating, Construction, etc.), motivate compliance with processes and timelines.
- Customer-focused in defining quality and establishing priorities.
- Have an excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to perform comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environment and successfully execute many tasks simultaneously, with the ability to work extra hours if needed to meet deadlines.
- Ability to manage time and deal with multiple issues, including shifting priorities and schedules.
- Effective computer skills: Microsoft Office Software and other Company and discipline specific software skills. Microsoft Projects, presentation skills, meeting management.
Location of Employment:
The Project Manager will be based on site during field construction and out of the Surespan Group Head Office in North Vancouver, British Columbia when not in the field. Travel to various sites in British Columbia and across Canada will be required. Applicants must be legally permitted to work in Canada.
