Job Description

The Simulation Operations Specialist (SOS) will provide technical, operational and training support across all Osler sites, aligning with simulation best practice standards in collaboration with the Simulation Operations team, facilitators and users of simulation. The SOS will have key roles in leadership, operations, equipment maintenance, data collection and analysis, education and quality improvement.

Accountabilities:

  • Ensures successful operation of simulators, technology, audiovisual equipment and other related equipment; troubleshooting as needed
  • Leads equipment onboarding and installation of new program equipment and software
  • Maintains expertise in the use of simulation AV equipment and multimedia software
  • Manages preventative maintenance scheduling, implementation and inventory control, including ordering medical, non-medical and simulation supplies
  • Identifies and communicates the need for replacement equipment and parts as needed
  • Provides recommendations for annual operations budget and inventory management
  • Leads orientation related to simulation equipment, spaces and software for simulation users and facilitators
  • Responsible for set-up and breakdown for simulation activities (including equipment and multimedia needs)
  • In collaboration with simulation facilitators, serves as simulator operator during simulation activities, adjusting physiologic parameters and responses as needed for learners
  • Facilitates simulation fidelity (i.e., moulage, props, simulator capabilities)
  • Works with simulation equipment and technologies including mannikins, task trainers, computers, LLEAP software, AV
  • Troubleshoots high fidelity and procedural skills equipment.; Video-debrief process
  • Installs software and hardware upgrades and maintain functionality of manikin components as directed by manufacturer support
  • Works with the Administrative Assistant to order and replace consumable and defective components
  • Maintains the simulation centre as a clean, safe and operational facility and optimal learning environment
  • Conducts and records routine equipment maintenance including repairs
  • Forecasts and communicates equipment, hardware, software upgrades and repairs/replacements
  • Performs diagnostics, trouble shooting and maintenance of simulators, escalating issues related to technology when needed
  • Installs software and hardware upgrades and maintain functionality of manikin components as directed by manufacturer support
  • Collaborates with manufacturers' service representatives
  • Utilizes and maintains medical equipment such as IV pumps, ventilators, anesthesia machines, standard defibrillators, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
  • Maintains databases, analyzes data and generates reports related to simulation usage metrics, forecasting maintenance requirements
  • Reviews evaluation data regularly and makes recommendations for program quality improvement
  • Solicits, records, and analyzes simulation facilitator and student feedback following simulation experiences
  • Provides timely reports to simulation facilitators following simulation session
  • Records and tracks equipment usage, damages, contracts and warranties
  • Regularly reviews equipment usage data to forecast maintenance requirements
  • Provides mentorship for staff, learners, and simulation facilitators on the effective and safe use of simulation equipment and technologies
  • Provides feedback on curriculum and scenarios related to simulation technology
  • Supports scholarship, research, and quality improvement initiatives within the program and organizationally
  • Provides input to how simulation information is disseminated
  • Collaborates with program staff to identify potential program needs
  • Identifies and presents recommendations related to improvement, innovation, and efficiencies to simulation steering committee
  • Promotes occupational safety compliance related to correct ergonomics, labelling of simulated equipment and medications, and other measures as needed
  • Maintains professional skills and refines expertise through appropriate professional developmental activities
  • Maintains proficiency in current and emerging simulation technologies
  • Remains current with national and international advances in simulation
  • Commits to engaging in simulation professional development and simulation organizations
  • Commits to achieving simulation certification (i.e., CHSOS) or other within 3 years (INACSL) of being hired
  • Leads in the planning, development, and implementation of simulation operations across all Osler sites, including supporting program equipment maintenance, data collection and analysis, education and training delivery and quality improvement
  • Collaborates with simulation operations team, facilitators, and steering committee in the delivery of simulation activities informed by simulation best practices, and organizational priorities
  • Actively involved in the planning, development and phased implementation of the Simulation Program
  • Membership in simulation steering committee
  • Provides simulation program updates and recommendations to the simulation steering committee
  • Attends and participants in internal and external projects related to simulation
  • Uses Osler policies and procedures and best practice guidelines to inform simulation operations
  • Works closely with the simulation Operations team, simulation steering committee and the Clinical Practice Manager
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate, preferably in information technology, biomedical engineering or science
  • One to two years of previous simulation experience required, preferably in a hospital or health care setting
  • Experience or knowledge of working with simulation equipment and technology, required
  • Experience or knowledge of computer programming, information technology, biomedical engineering required
  • Experience with AV and simulation software (LLEAP) an asset
  • Previous training or knowledge in simulation operations, technologies and software preferred
  • Knowledge of or previous training in medical terminology preferred
  • Ability to work with and troubleshoot malfunctions related to AV, computer software (Microsoft Office suite), equipment and technology
  • Strong teaching, facilitations and presentation skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational skills, including prioritizing and being adaptable to program needs as they arise
  • Effective problem-solving and creativity skills
  • Ability to travel across various Osler sites, and has access to a vehicle
  • Ability to work on site and flex working hours as needed to suite various simulation activities
  • Ability to perform lifting and transporting of equipment using safe transfer technique

Additional Information

Hours: Currently days, Monday to Friday (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

Annual salary:
Minimum: $77,200.50
Maximum: $96,505.50
