Analytical Chemistry, Analyst

Reporting to the Analytical Manager, the Analyst is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and operation of analytical equipment, as part of a team accountable for the generation of analytical results. This includes performing integration of standards and samples, charting of calibration slopes and perform monitoring of control samples used in the analytical process.

In consultation with the Scientist, the Analyst may be required to assist with method validation, method modification, stability testing and the analysis of QC materials beyond the scope of routine analysis.

Duties and responsibilities include but not necessarily limited to:

  • Run analytical samples on the required instrumentation ensuring:
  • correct injection, proper integration, calculation and recording of sample results, etc.
  • equipment calibration and verification is performed prior to sample analysis
  • Accuracy and precision in proper preparation of solutions, calibration standards, spike solutions, etc.
  • The Analytical Standards database is maintained, records of standards in use are filed and maintained, records of retained and discarded standards are updated
  • Applicable QC charting for instrument calibration and control samples are updated to monitor instrument performance
  • Quality control parameters are recorded by constantly monitoring/calculating/charting (where applicable) of LFB, LFM, standards run as samples and control brand results, during the instrument run in “real” time
  • Thorough QC investigations are conducted when instrument or control samples data fail to meet target values
  • Generate reports that include relevant QC information (recoveries, standards as samples, etc.) and involve the combining of smoking data with instrument data including:
  • reviewing the completeness of the data package, with records associated to any investigations of unexpected results, prior to submitting to the Scientist
  • Perform derivatization, solid phase extractions (SPE) and/or final dilutions of samples (or standards) to be run on the instrument, as required.
  • Ensure proper performance of instrumentation/equipment by:
  • conducting certain maintenance and/or repairs, as well as, maintain communication with the instrument repair representative(s) during service calls
  • performing equipment verification (syringe, pipettor) and glassware verification
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualification Requirements:

  • M.Sc. or B.Sc. (Chemistry, preferred)
  • Diploma (Science Laboratory Technician, Environmental Biology or Chemical Technology)
  • Chemical Engineering Degree
  • Experience operating Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) or ICP-MS, preferably with Agilent instruments
  • Have at least 5 years of hands-on experience with advanced GCMS maintenance and troubleshooting or 2 years of experience in operation and maintenance of ICP-MS
  • Understanding of chemical measurements and able to measure solutions properly
  • Knowledgeable in using, handling and disposing of chemicals properly and safely
  • Thorough understanding of contamination
  • Able to prioritize to remain efficient
  • Demonstrate patience/adaptability to change
  • Work while under pressure and with various distractions
  • Organization of tasks to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills
  • Organize workload in order to complete daily duties
  • Must be able to work cooperatively in a team environment
