JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Transportation Driver's focus will be on providing safe, calm, and reliable transportation to Sagamok Anishnawbek members for medically required health services in Elliot Lake, Massey, Espanola, and Sudbury. They will use a combination of customer service, communication, and defensive driving skills.

They will operate and maintain Medical Transportation Program fleet vehicles, collect, and input medical transportation data; and consult with the Medical Clerk/Transportation Coordinator in the planning and delivery of transportation services.

POSITION DUTIES:

  • Transport community members to and from medical appointments, maintaining a pre-arranged schedule.
  • Assist the passengers with all their needs including carrying luggage, assisting in and out of the vehicle, assisting with seat belts, and other items as required.
  • Transfer wheelchairs, scooters or other medical equipment into a medical van using the ramp provided.
  • Operate medical transportation vehicle accessibility equipment, including ramp and rotary chairs.
  • Pick-up and deliver medical supplies and equipment (such as prescriptions, wheelchairs) as assigned.
  • Maintain a daily logbook of all client transportation.
  • Communicate with patients to confirm conclusion of medical appointments and with the Sagamok Anishnawbek Naandwedjige-Gamik during trips.
  • Maintain vehicle ensuring that inside is neat and sanitary, and the exterior is washed regularly.
  • Report any vehicle maintenance and repairs to the Transportation Coordinator as required.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Valid driver's license and vehicle for on-the-job use.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
  • Sign and maintain an annual oath of confidentiality.
  • Secure and maintain certification in Privacy and Confidentiality.
  • Provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check prior to working first day.
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid Certification or willing to get certified.
  • Be able to drive for long periods of time depending on the trip requested.
  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, and manage time and workloads.
  • Must be willing and available to work flexible hours and overtime as required.
  • Be willing and available to work shifts including early morning, daytime, evening, weekend, and statutory holiday hours.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Consistent use of proper body mechanics in carrying out all activities.
  • Required to lift objects up to 50 pounds, or push residents/clients up to 300 lbs. in wheelchairs.
  • Required to assist clients into and out of medical transportation vehicles, and to provide weight-bearing support for clients with fractures.
  • Required to sit for long periods of time without relief.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A valid Ontario Class G driver's license.
  • A positive Driver's Abstract.
  • Ability to speak the Ojibway language, and knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous culture and heritage are considered definite assets.
