Position: Switchboard Operator

Status: Part-Time

Department: Switchboard

Union Association: CUPE

Salary: $21.68- $25.88/hour

Hours: 8 hour shifts (6:30am to 2:30pm & 2:30pm to 10:30pm)

7 days per week - Must be available to work all shifts, weekends and statutory holidays (hours subject to change based on operational needs)

Position Summary:

Responsible for receiving and directing incoming and outgoing calls on a multi-line switchboard for the entire organization. Responsible for accurately accessing the BGH On Call site for Specialists/Departments, on call schedules; overhead paging as necessary; attending to fire alarm system as well as monitoring other facility type alarms, and registering out-patients within the Hospital Information System (QuadraMed) after hours and on weekends. Provide clerical support services and information to the public, as well as other departments as required, i.e. phone numbers, meeting locations, patient location and general inquires. Responsible for all Emergency Codes as defined with the Emergency Code manual.

Participates in service and hospital-wide activities and programs that model and promote a safe and healthy patient-centered environment and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of Secondary school graduation diploma with preference for post-secondary training in office administration.
  • One year previous experience required in Switchboard or in an Office Setting with QuadraMed experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and Web based applications.
  • Previous medical background a definite asset

Knowledge, Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Processing reports, accepting bill payments, and keeping a balanced cash
  • Distributing keys for various department staff
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills primarily in QuadraMed, Excel and Word mandatory
  • Demonstrated work experience in multi-tasking and ability to work well under pressure
  • Demonstrated excellence in spoken and written communication
  • Demonstrated ability to relate in a tactful and sensitive manner with staff, patients and the general public
  • Ability to organize work tasks and work independently
  • Excellent problem solving skills and possess attentive listening skills
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Good attendance and availability required
