Reports to: Environmental Technical Manager, Manager Environmental Services

Employment Type: Full-time

Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Hourly wage: $24.00

Position Summary

The Environmental Lab Technician is responsible for performing laboratory testing on various environmental samples, including wastewater, sludge, fuel, and other waste materials. The technician ensures accurate analysis, records data into company systems, and collaborates with other departments to handle materials and processes. The role involves working with hazardous materials and requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform efficiently under time-sensitive conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Test incoming bulk load samples, container samples, outgoing bulk samples, and sales samples.
  • Analyze samples, including wastewater, fuel, grease, sludge, and heavy metals, and input results into FileMaker.
  • Direct yard staff regarding unloading locations, disposal of containerized waste, and outgoing bulk liquid loads.
  • Conduct regular testing of water treatment samples and manage results to ensure environmental safety.
  • Maintained and troubleshot laboratory equipment, including the MP4200 Agile and other machines, and assisted with sample preparation for certified lab testing.
  • Conduct maintenance of the boiler room, including sampling in the winter months.
  • Test for TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) to ensure no environmental harm.
  • Perform daily calibrations of instruments and manage sample labeling, analytics, and paperwork.
  • Collaborate with operations, sales, and dispatch to communicate sample results and disposal information.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the lab, including dishwashing and general housekeeping tasks.
  • Request lab supplies and maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Communicate with the supervisor/management when issues with equipment or procedures arise and report any equipment/procedure problems on time.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in chemistry or environmental studies is an asset.
  • Experience with lab testing, waste management, or environmental services is preferred.
  • Familiarity with FileMaker, Microsoft Office Suite, and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues, particularly with the MP4200 Agile or similar machines.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and stand for long periods.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in a lab environment with exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and flammable substances.
  • The role may require climbing stairs, lifting heavy equipment, and working in noisy environments.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
  • Overtime and weekend work may be required during peak business periods.

Performance Metrics

  • Timely and accurate completion of sample testing and analysis.
  • Proper documentation and input of data into FileMaker.
  • Effective communication with operations, sales, and management to ensure timely handling of materials.
  • Regular maintenance of laboratory equipment and cleanliness of the work environment.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting, pulling, and carrying up to 50 lbs as needed.
  • Climbing stairs.
  • Standing for long periods with minimal sitting.
