The Controls Engineer will be a key contributor to the design, development, and implementation of advanced control systems where safety to the public is of utmost importance. This role requires a deep understanding of safety standards, redundancy systems, and rigorous testing protocols. The successful candidate will lead the development of control system architectures, ensure compliance with international safety regulations, and oversee the commissioning of systems with a focus on reliability and fail-safe operation. The candidate must be a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng), in the process of being licensed, or posses the required experience to become licensed.
This role offers a significant opportunity for a seasoned Controls Engineer to lead the development of cutting-edge safety-critical control systems. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of control systems used in public-facing environments, contributing to the company's reputation as a leader in the industry.
Please note this is an in-office position, located at our head office in Ottawa, ON, address: 2650 Queensview Dr #150, Ottawa, ON K2B 8H6.
YOUR CHALLENGE:
- System Architecture Development: Design and develop control system architectures that prioritize modularity, safety and redundancy. Ensure systems meet the highest standards of reliability and fail-safe operation, particularly in public-facing environments.
- Controls Programming: Program and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems with a focus on safety-critical applications. Expertise in Rockwell (RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000) and Siemens (STEP 7, TIA Portal) environments is essential.
- Safety and Risk Management: Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify potential hazards and implement robust safety measures. Develop and implement redundant safety systems and emergency protocols to protect the public and operators.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all control systems comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. Stay current with changes in safety regulations and integrate them into system designs to maintain compliance and enhance safety.
- Safety System Validation: Lead the validation of safety-critical systems through rigorous Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and on-site commissioning. Ensure all systems perform to specification under all operating conditions, including failure scenarios.
- Network Communication & Security: Design and secure robust communication networks that facilitate reliable data exchange between control system components. Troubleshoot and optimize network configurations, ensuring systems are protected from cybersecurity threats.
- Documentation & Standards Compliance: Develop detailed controls development documentation, including Theory of Operations (TOO), Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Technical Specifications, and user manuals. Ensure all documents are precise and meet quality standards.
- Training & Knowledge Transfer: Provide advanced training to operators, maintenance personnel, and other stakeholders on the operation and maintenance of safety-critical control systems. Ensure trainees fully understand safety protocols and system functionalities to maintain operational safety.
- Continuous Improvement: Lead initiatives to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of control systems. Stay informed about the latest technological advancements and industry best practices, and apply this knowledge to improve system designs.
- Thoroughly review project-related documents such as Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) drawings, Electrical Layouts, and System Overviews to understand project requirements and ensure alignment with control systems specifications.
- Conduct both Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to validate the performance and functionality of control systems. Document test results and coordinate with applicable parties to resolve any issues identified.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:
- Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a closely related field. Must be a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng).
