The Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) is a program delivered in collaboration with Ontario Health and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). SPEP Nurse Learners will work in a learner capacity for up to 450 hours under the direct supervision of a preceptor to demonstrate application of nursing knowledge, skill, and judgment. Learners will work in close collaboration with the healthcare team to demonstrate an understanding of their nursing accountabilities in line with the CNO Entry to Practice Competencies.


Responsibilities:
●Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse preceptor assigned to them on the unit and in a manner consistent with Banwell Gardens policies standards, while taking into account the limitations placed on the position. RN preceptors support RN SPEP candidates and RPN candidates may be supported by RNs or RPNs.

● Liaises with other health care personnel, agencies and families
● Maintains good relationships with Medical/Support/Home staff, residents, families and general public
● Utilizes leadership skills to identify problems and problem-solving on the unit
● Monitors that care is delivered is consistent with the resident Bill of Rights.
● Required to understand the nature and meaning of quality indicators used by the Home and to understand which indicators are publicly reported.
● Required to participate in the improvement of the indicators and achieve satisfactory results.
● Actively listens to residents and family concerns, take appropriate actions to resolve the issue in accordance with policies of the Home
● Conducts unit rounds at the beginning and end of shift.
● Processes Physician orders and administers medications and treatments in compliance with the policies of Pharmacy provider, the Home and the Standard of the College of Nurses. Documents and reports all errors and omissions
● Maintains accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care in compliance with the legislative requirements and the policies of the Home
● Demonstrates understanding of the Ministry of Long-term Care mandatory reporting and critical incidents and follow steps outlined in the policies of the Home.
● Other duties as assigned and or indicated in Job Task Inventory


Qualifications:
The qualifications needed to join our family are as follows:
● Basic CPR

Applicants are eligible if they have met all their CNO registration requirements except for:

  • Evidence of Practice, or
  • Evidence of Practice and Language Proficiency.

● Experience in long-term care setting an asset
● Ability to work with and relate to interdisciplinary team members
● Well-developed written and oral communication skills
● To show evidence of being focused on people's feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
● To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals' rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.
● Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one
● As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray
(within the last year), as per Public Health requirements
● Two supervisory references required
● COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment
● French speaking an asset (for Champlain and Lancaster)
● Italian speaking an asset (for Villa Marconi)
