JOB DESCRIPTION
This position is an opportunity to join a dynamic and skilled in-house Legal team with an excellent work culture. The Contract Specialist Paralegal at Irving Shipbuilding Inc. (ISI) will act as a first point of contact between ISI departments and the Legal Department on contract matters of varying complexity, promoting a robust and risk-based approach to contract drafting and administration. The work will also require close collaboration with the other members of the Legal Department to meet the contracting and other legal needs of the business.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contract Intake: Be the first point of contact for most requests for Legal Department support and ensure that internal clients (primarily Irving Shipbuilding's Supply Chain group) have identified information necessary for negotiating and executing contracts, based on their scale, schedule, and complexity.
  • Contract Negotiation: Assist the Supply Chain group with contract negotiations, engaging legal counsel in the Legal Department as appropriate.
  • Contract Drafting: Prepare initial drafts of contracts, schedules, amendments, and other contractual documents for review by legal counsel.
  • Contract Management and Administration: Open, close, organize, and manage correspondence, legal work product, and other documents through iManage Document Management software (prior experience with iManage not required).
  • Engage directly with the Supply Chain group to attain a full understanding of all near- and mid-term priorities ensure alignment with the Legal Department and assist with monitoring of contract obligations.
  • Provide timely support regarding contract lifecycle management, internal approval requirements, and approaches to risk management, while engaging legal counsel in the Legal Department when appropriate.
  • Provide other legal support such as drafting letters, advancing Legal teamwork plan and process improvement projects, and managing Access to Information Act requests.
  • Provide administrative support to ISI's General Counsel and Legal Department, on an as-needed basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field, with preference for formal Paralegal training.
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a paralegal role supporting legal counsel engaged in commercial or construction contracting.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with legal software packages and database management considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting procurement teams is beneficial but not required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and being a motivated self-starter.
