The project you will you be working on:

The Ontario Line ("OL") is a fully integrated, stand-alone, rapid transit system that connects Ontario Science Centre to the Exhibition and Ontario Place grounds. The Northern Civil, Stations and Tunnel ("NC") project consists of approximately 7 kms of underground subway and elevated guideway, with stations along the segment providing connections to surface bus and streetcar routes. The NC project has been divided into two main progressive design-build contracts: (1) the Elevated Guideways and Stations Contract ("EGS") and the Pape Tunnel and Underground Station Contract ("PTUS"), with supporting Early Works.

JOB SUMMARY:

The ideal candidate will assist in collecting, processing, and maintaining spatial data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. This role requires expertise in mapping, spatial analysis, and database management to support various projects, including urban planning, infrastructure development, and environmental management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect, integrate, and manage spatial data: Source, organize, and maintain spatial data from various formats (e.g., vector, raster, attribute data) using GIS software.
  • Perform spatial analysis: Apply techniques such as buffering, overlay analysis, and network analysis to interpret spatial relationships and support project goals.
  • Create maps and visualizations: Develop maps, charts, and interactive visualizations (e.g., web maps, 3D models) to clearly communicate spatial information to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with project teams: Work with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., planners, engineers, environmental scientists) to understand project needs and provide GIS support.
  • Utilize programming for automation: Use languages like Python or SQL to automate GIS workflows, enhance data analysis, and improve efficiency.
  • Ensure data accuracy and quality: Validate and maintain the integrity of spatial databases, ensuring data is up-to-date and meets project standards.
  • Support GIS software and tools: Demonstrate proficiency in Esri GIS platform and troubleshoot technical issues as needed.
  • Stay informed on GIS trends: Keep up-to-date with advancements in GIS technology, tools, and best practices to enhance project delivery.

THE ROLE:

  • Primarily office-based, with occasional fieldwork for data collection.
  • Full-time position with standard business hours; occasional overtime for project deadlines.
  • Regular interaction with engineers, surveyors, planners, and project managers.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in GIS data management and analysis.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS, QGIS, and other GIS software.
  • Experience with GPS data collection, remote sensing, and geospatial analysis.
  • Knowledge of coordinate systems, projections, and geospatial data formats.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work with large datasets and spatial databases (SQL, PostgreSQL, etc.).
  • Experience with Python, R, or GIS scripting for automation (preferred)
