CGMH is an acute care hospital providing emergency care, diagnostic services including lab, imaging and cardio respiratory therapy, as well as two inpatient units (medicine and surgery). The Opportunity:

Under the delegation of a Supervising Physician, the role of the Physician Assistant (PA) will be to help coordinate, provide, and evaluate care of patients registered in the CGMH Emergency Department.

Primary responsibilities involve assessing and managing medium to high acuity complex patients that may require admission as well as low acuity patients. The Physician Assistant is expected to work reasonably independently with good clinical intuition however, will review each case with the staff physician. Staff physician involvement in each patient case will vary depending on the complexity of the patient the Physician Assistant is expected to work with the pace and clinical acumen that contributes both to ED eficiency and excellent care for each patient. Leads Emergency Department physician education in Meditech Expanse and undertakes improvement initiatives related to workflow processes.

The Physician Assistant will be a lead care provider for our innovative ED Fast Track and will complete daily ED call backs to ensure that abnormal lab and imaging findings are followed up accordingly.

Qualifications:

Must have a Bachelor of Science Degree (Physician Assistant), Bachelor of Science Physician Assistant Degree, or Canadian Forces Health Services Physician Assistant Baccalaureate degree required.
Demonstrated knowledge of Emergency medicine and the Emergency Department patient.
Knowledge of Physician Assistant Scope of Practice, Delegation of Controlled Acts, and Medical Directives.
Knowledge of relevant legislative and policy requirements applicable to the organization.
Excellent time management, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated abilities in problem solving, team building, conflict resolution, decision-making, managing change, and group process.
Strong computer skills and technological aptitude.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Function effectively as a physician extender to provide optimal, ethical patient centered care.
Manage medium to high acuity patient including patients who may require admission as well as low-acuity patients in our See and Treat area.
Apply clinical knowledge appropriate to care of ED patients assessed as CTAS level 4 and 5, with some CTAS level 3 patients as per established criteria.
Work as a lead medical provider in our innovative ED Fast Track Program Check it out!
Seek appropriate consultation from the supervising physician and other health professionals.
Perform a complete and appropriate assessment of patients and formulate a differential diagnosis and clinical treatment plan through interviews, histories, and physical examinations.
Provide education to patients, families, and other health care professionals as appropriate to the clinical setting.
Facilitate coordination of the interdisciplinary team via referrals to appropriate health care providers authorized by the supervising physician.
Active participation in the Hospital's Health and Safety Internal Responsibility System, which includes maintaining accountability for the defined responsibilities listed in applicable legislation, policies and procedures.
Actively contributes within the scope of the position to the enhancement of the patient experience through continuous improvement, learning, and teamwork, with the goal of creating an environment that is caring, inclusive, respectful, patient and family-centred with a focus on excellence, innovation and safety.

Hours of Work: Please be reminded that as a Hospital, in order to provide the necessary patient care, our operations run 24/7. Therefore, depending on the program for which you are applying, it may be an expectation that you are available to work weekdays and weekends, as well as all shifts - days, evenings, and nights.

Wage: $47.83 - $56.81 per hour
