Job Title: Farmers' Market Manager
Location: Barrie, Ontario, Canada
Type: Part-time

Position Overview:The Barrie Farmers' Market is one of Ontario's oldest markets, established in 1846 and still operating on the original site now home to Barrie City Hall. This vibrant market featuring 25 (70) vendors, operates indoors during winter and outdoors in warmer months. Governed by a Board of Directors, the Operations Manager is responsible for; marketing of, strategic growth of, and smooth running of the Saturday Barrie Farmers' Market. This includes; managing vendor relations, enforcing rules, handling logistics, and fostering a positive community experience through engaging events that attract and retain customers.

Key Responsibilities

Market Operations and Vendor Coordination

  • Attend the Barrie Farmers' Market every Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and during any additional operating hours or events. Arrange for a vendor substitute, with Board approval, in cases of illness or unavoidable absence.
  • Allocate vendor spaces and oversee display setups in line with market rules to optimize flow and visibility.
  • Oversee the setup, operation, and teardown of both indoor and outdoor markets, ensuring the site is safe, clean, and well-organized.
  • Enforce market rules and regulations to promote fairness and consistency among vendors.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for vendors, addressing concerns promptly and professionally.
  • During the summer months, manage summer students delegating tasks to support in the market operations.

Administrative and Financial Management

  • Respond in a timely and professional manner to emails and calls.
  • Liaison with members of Barrie Fire, health organizations and the City of Barrie employees as needed.
  • Collect vendor fees for stall rentals and equipment, maintaining accurate records of all transactions.
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Board of Directors summarizing revenue, expenditures, vendor attendance, absenteeism, issues, feedback, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with the bookkeeper to ensure financial accountability.
  • Apply for grants and reach out to community sponsors for support that would benefit the Farmers' Market as needed.
  • Maintain and regularly update the Barrie Farmers' Market website with accurate and engaging content, including vendor lists, events, and announcements.

Marketing and Community Engagement

  • Promote the market through social media, local advertising, and community partnerships to increase attendance and awareness.
  • Plan and execute special events or themed market days to engage visitors and enhance the customer experience.
  • Act as the public face of the market, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

Compliance and Ethical Standards

  • Ensure compliance with local health, safety, legal, and insurance regulations.
  • Address and resolve any safety or operational issues promptly to maintain a secure environment for vendors and visitors.
  • Ensure the validity of Producers via 'Site Visits' as needed.
  • Refrain from selling or displaying personal goods while employed as the Market Manager or during working hours.

Qualifications

  • Outgoing and personable
  • Experience in conflict resolution and diplomacy skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in event planning, vendor management, or community engagement is preferred.
  • Familiarity with local food systems or farmers' markets is an asset.
  • Proficiency in website management and social media platforms.(be specific)
  • Must be able to lift 25 kgs
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions during outdoor market seasons.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications an asset.

Working Hours

This position requires mandatory availability on Saturday market days 6:00am - 2:00pm (8 hours) and additional weekday hours (22 hours), working remotely from home, for administrative tasks, planning, and attend meetings as required.
