Job Description:

An opportunity currently exists for a Sr SCADA Engineer within the Project Development Department of AltaLink. Reporting to the Manager, P&C/SCADA & Telecom Engineering, the successful candidate will work with internal & external technical staff to ensure that Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) facilities are appropriately designed and integrated into existing facilities.

This position will appeal to individuals with Substation Networking, Remote Supervisory, Distributed Control and Relaying skills who are looking for an opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be accountable for the following:

  • Provide timely and effective SCADA technical input into conceptual engineering, project scoping & estimating and project execution. This includes:
  • Create and support writing of Design Basis memorandums (DBM) that provide sufficient detail to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to the Engineering contractor;
  • Review technical drawings & specifications to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety;
  • Working as part of a project design team, complete the SCADA design of facilities including station drawings and SCADA device (e.g. RTU) configuration. Deliver accurate and thorough designs that will meet specifications in the electrical code, AltaLink standards and engineering practices; and are compatible with good construction practices and overall due diligence;
  • Identify material and equipment required to complete projects;
  • Install SCADA configuration files and provide technical support during construction to the site personnel completing commissioning activities;
  • Maintain good relationships with project management personnel and contractors through the execution of projects; and
  • Develop SCADA configuration work plans and prepare supervisory change notice requests.

Requirements

The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Telecommunication or Computer Engineering;
  • Registered or qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Engineers & Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA);
  • 7 + years of SCADA design, testing and configuration experience for high voltage facilities;
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities;
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes;
  • Positively influence others;
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, risk assessment and problem solving skills;
  • Strong written, reporting, graphical and oral presentation skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously;
  • Willing to travel within the province approximately 20% of the time;
  • Valid driver's license; and
  • Proven track record of good attendance and performance.

Experience with the following would be an asset:

  • SCADA Systems and DNP3;
    Ethernet and IP networks, and serial communication;
  • Power system elements and metering (e.g. Breakers, Transformers, 3 Phase Power);
  • Microsoft Excel including the use of macros;
  • GE Energy/Harris, Cybectec/Copper Power Systems, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, or SUBNET Solutions SCADA platforms;
  • Config Pro 5, SMP Tools, Substation Explorer, Substation Server, AcSELerator Quickset, or AcSELerator RTAC;
  • Siemens, Hirschmann, and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories LAN hardware; and
  • Schneider Electric and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Power Measurement meters.
  • Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Siemens and GE Multilin protection relays:
    • Protocol analyzers ASE2000 Test Set or WireShark;
    • Computer hardware and operating systems; and
    • IEC 61850 implementation.
