The Opportunity:

This national role will be responsible for the day-to-day activities and leadership of Operational Risk Management within the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) function. The successful candidate will report to the AVP, Risk Manager and will work closely with the Senior Vice President (SVP), Head of Business Alignment & Chief Risk Officer (CRO) and other Canadian and global leaders both within and outside of ERM.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Champion and model our Liberty values and Guidelines for Inclusion to drive market leading culture and ensure positive employee engagement.
  • Lead Operational Risk Management, collaborating with stakeholders within Canada, North America, and Liberty offices / entities around the world to ensure appropriate risk management of various business processes.
  • Execute, monitor, and continuously improve a holistic Operational Risk Management program including related controls and processes. This program will include the identification and oversight of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) and associated tolerance levels within a variety of risk categories including underwriting operations, technology, cyber, data, third-party risk, model risk, talent, compliance, tax, operational resilience, and more.
  • Coordinate with key stakeholders to identify, assess, and prioritize operational risks to improve awareness and understanding of risks or risk scenarios that have the potential to impact our ability to achieve strategic objectives or cause a material operational loss.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and provide thought leadership in operational risk management to business stakeholders, particularly related to risk identification, strategies to adequately mitigate identified risks, and performing risk and control assessments.
  • Monitor developments in the operational risk profile and significant sources of operational risk. Lead strategic analysis of operational risks to provide insights into risk themes, trends and developments to inform risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure awareness of and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements /guidelines.
  • Contribute to the assessment and aggregation of the GRS operational risk profile, coordinating with the broader GRS Operational Risk Management team.
  • Implement robust risk reporting systems to provide timely and accurate insights into the operational risk profile, escalating issues as and when necessary.
  • Participate in the group-wide harmonization of operational risk management methodology and support the consolidation of enterprise operational risk management platforms.
  • Contribute to the GRS rollout of the new Group-wide operational risk management system.
  • Contribute to preparation of the Canada Risk Committee meeting and the GRS Operational Risk Management Committee meeting, presenting at these Committees as required.
  • Lead large-scale projects from concept to implementation with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate effective prioritization of workload.
  • Challenge the status quo, experiment with new ideas, and develop an industry leading approach to how ERM contributes to the strength and future growth of the business.
  • Although this role will be primarily focused on Operational Risk Management, the successful candidate will contribute to other initiatives as needed to support the success of the ERM function and the broader Liberty Mutual Canada and GRS organizations.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Competencies typically acquired through a Bachelor's degree and at least 8-10 years of relevant work experience.
  • Advanced education or professional qualification(s) are preferred (MBA, CPA, or similar), as is having a professional qualification in one or more areas of risk management.
  • Experience in operational risk management including assessment methodologies and risk reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of operational processes, controls, and regulations within the Finance industry, preferably gained through prior roles in insurance or banking.
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with stakeholders at all levels and across functional areas, influencing and holding accountable as appropriate.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both formal and informal settings, as well as a proven ability to effectively present technical concepts to non-technical individuals.
  • Ability to perform high level work both independently and collaboratively as a team member or leader.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to perform complex analysis and make data-driven decisions.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills.

The target annual salary for this role is $145,000 - $165,000. Salary is commensurate with candidate experience.
