Facility: Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home - is a non-profit, 110-bed long-term care facility situated next door to the Dartmouth General Hospital. We provide quality, resident-focused services for seniors and their families in a holistic, home-like environment through dedicated, caring staff, volunteers and community partners. Focusing on our commitment to the highest standards of practice at all levels, Oakwood Terrace promotes a healthy workplace environment for all our employees.
Oakwood Terrace is a 42-year-old nursing home owned and operated by Dartmouth Senior Care Society, a non-profit organization that is focused on putting the people we look after at the forefront of decisions whilst ensuring we look after the employees who help us attain this goal. With the support of the Government of Nova Scotia, the organization will be opening a replacement home for 144 residents in 2028/29.

Job Summary:
At Oakwood Terrace, the Long-Term Care Assistant (LTCA) is an integral member of the Recreation Therapy Services, collaborating with the wider interdisciplinary team. This position is a full-time, permanent role that is not part of the union. The LTCA will work in close partnership with the Director of Recreation Therapy, recreation programmers, and fellow LTCAs to support residents in achieving their daily objectives and participating in meaningful, individualized activities. The LTCA will foster team objectives, follow guidance from the recreation team, solicit feedback, consider diverse perspectives, and adapt tasks and responsibilities in accordance with the facility's priorities. Through this role, LTCAs will acquire valuable experience and skills while working directly with older adults in long-term care who may face physical disabilities, mental health issues, and/or dementia.

Qualifications and Skills:

• High school diploma or equivalent (Therapeutic Recreaton an asset)
• Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular and consistent basis
• Flexible schedule: days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
• Must have interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills
• Compassion, integrity, maturity, respect and a positive attitude are essential attributes
• Physical ability to perform job duties whose physical demands are considered average to heavy.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, time management, judgement and decision-making skills.
• Previous experience in working with the elderly in the community of Homes for Special Care setting is an asset.

Duties:
1. Facilitates both individual and group recreational activities, which occur during the day, evenings, weekends, public holidays, and special events organized by the institution.
2. Engages in one-on-one interactions to assist residents in pursuing their personal leisure interests, including the use of social media for video communication.
3. Employs proficient time management techniques to relay observations, progress, and the status of residents to the relevant healthcare team members.
4. Ensures the maintenance of a secure environment, along with the proper upkeep of supplies and equipment.
5. Actively participates in the organization's quality assurance programs.
6. Aids in the documentation process of residents' care plans.
7. Engages in ongoing quality improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to enhance resident care and service provision.
8. Other duties as required.

Salary:

$20 per hour
